Lady Bears crush Notre Dame for National Championship, Marlins open new crib, Tiger 4-1 in the Masters
Brittney Griner and the Baylor Bears completed an epic 40-0 season with a dominating 80-61 over Notre Dame in the Ladies National Championship game. The 6’8″ Griner, the National Player of the Year, scored 26 points to go along with 13 rebounds and five blocks as the Bears put the Irish away early with a 12-2 run to take a 21-10 lead. Notre Dame got as close 34-28 at the half but the Baylor lead ballooned to as much as 25 as the Bears dominated the second half. The Lady Bears outrebounded Notre Dame 46-27 to become the seventh undefeated Ladies National Champion but the first with 40 wins.
Spurs win eighth straight with 125-90 blowout of the Cavs
The San Antonio Spurs are far from being a group of washed up old guys. After flying under the radar for most the year, the Spurs are flirting with the best record in the NBA after winning their eighth straight game. Patty Mills came off the bunch to lead the Spurs with 20 points. Antawn Jamison had 15 for the Cavs who lost their eighth straight. The Pacers trailed the Knicks by 15 after three quarters but used a 40-17 fourth quarter to take down New York 112-104. Danny Granger gave Knick fans a Reggie Miller flashback with 14 points in the final stanza including three threes. Carmelo Anthony had a season high 39 for the visitors who are shothanded without Amara Stoudemire and Jeremy Lin.
In other games around “The Association”, the Pistons beat Orlando 102-95. The Magic played without Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson, and Ryan Anderson, all out with various injuries. Toronto beat Charlotte 92-87 in a battle of bottom feeders. Miami beat Philadelphia 99-93 behind 41 points from Lebron James. Memphis beat Golden State by four send the Warriors down to their sixth straight defeat. Phoenix won at Sacramento 109-100 and the Lakers survived New Jersey 91-87 without Andrew Bynum who rested a sore ankle.
Rangers claim top seed in the East
The Rangers guaranteed themselves home ice throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs and took a big step to winning the President’s Trophy with a 5-3 win over the Flyers. The Broadway Blues swept the season series with Philly 6-0 and their 109 points ties them overall with Vancouver. The Canucks beat the Ducks 5-4 in a shootout. The Sabres came from three goals down to beat Toronto 6-5 and take a one-point lead over Washington for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East. New Jersey dumped the Islanders 3-1. Pittsburg skated past Boston 5-3. Sid the Kid had two goals for the Pens. Carolina, Winnipeg, Nashville, San Jose, and Phoenix were the other winners. Phoenix is tied with the Kings and one point ahead of San Jose in the log-jammed Pacific. All three teams have two games left.
The Marlins open up Miami Stadium tonight vs St Louis
The new-look Miami Marlins open up their new ballpark tonight against the World Champion St Louis Cardinals. Kyle Lohse (14-10, 3.67) faces Josh Johnson (3-1, 1.67, 9 games) in the 7:05 PM EST start. The Marlins are -175 favorites and the total is 7 with the under -120. Lohse is 2-2 with a 5.85 ERA in five career starts vs the Fish. Johnson is 1-2 with a 3.60 ERA in five starts against the champs.
Tiger Woods is favored as the Masters tees off at 7:50 AM on Thursday
The first major of the 2012 season tees off tomorrow at Augusta as an elite field vies for the Green Jacket of the Masters.
