NFL officials agree to a deal to end the lockout

In the backlash of Monday’s Green Bay/Seattle debacle, the NFL and the NFLRA have reached an agreement to end the lockout. The agreement between the NFL and the officials will be an eight-year deal. CBS reports that referee salaries will go from $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 in 2013, rising to $205,000 by 2019. The referee pension plan will remain in place through 2016 and then will be frozen. It will be replaced by a defined contribution agreement starting in 2017 that will feature contributions from the NFL of $18,000 per official (eventually increased to $23,000 per) along with a partial match of a 401(k).

The NFL will have the right to hire full-time officials beginning in 2013. And the NFL will also be given the right to retain additional officials for training and developmental purposes.

“Our officials will be back on the field starting tomorrow night,” Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement released by the NFL. “We appreciate the commitment of the NFLRA in working through the issues to reach this important agreement.”

Week Four of the NFL starts tonight as the Cleveland Browns travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens. The game opened Baltimore -12 with the total 44. Neither has changed. The money-line is Baltimore -650 with Cleveland +475 on the takeback. Weather will partly cloudy with a 30% chance of light showers. Temperature at game time is expected to be around 66 degrees.

Tom Osborne retiring as the Nebraska AD

Legendary Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne is stepping down as the AD at Nebraska, this time for good. The 75-year-old Osborne announced Wednesday that he will retire Jan. 1 after five years on the job. He’ll become athletic director emeritus and stay involved in department operations through July 30. Osborne coached Husker football finishing with a 255-49-3 record, an .836 winning percentage that ranked fifth all-time among Division I coaches, and 13 conference titles. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1998. He also served as a US Congressman from 2000-2006.

Fresh off their upset of USC, Stanford travels to Washington to meet the Huskies. The Cardinal opened as a 7-point favorite with the total 49 1/2. The side has not moved but the high low has been bet down to 47 1/2. Stanford has won six of the last two in the series including 65-20 and 41-0 the last two years. Kickoff is at 9:00 PM EST on ESPN.

Tigers grab one-game lead over the WSox

The Tigers took a one-game lead over the White Sox in the AL Central after beating the Kansas City 5-4 while the Chicago was losing at home to Cleveland. It is the first time since July 24th that Motown has sat alone at the top of the division. Oakland spanked Texas 9-3 to climb to withing three games of the first place Rangers. The A’s play Texas again tonight and then finish the season with a three-game set with the Rangers Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
