NFL News and Notes

Josh Freeman has come out out of Monday night’s debacle vs the Giants with concussion like symptoms and will need to complete the league head injury protocol to be cleared. Opening day starter Christian Ponder will likely get the start Monday night vs the Packers.

The Cleveland Browns will start veteran Jason Campbell over Brendan Weeden in their Sunday game vs the Chiefs. Campbell becomes the 20th starter for the Browns since the franchise resurfaced in Cleveland in 1999. Weeden currently ranks 32nd in the league in completion percentage, 31st in yards per attempt and 30th in passer rating.

The St Louis Rams signed two quarterbacks on Tuesday to back up starter Kellen Clemens. The Rams signed Austin Davis and Brady Quinn to back up Clemens who has been pressed into action after starter Sam Bradford tore his ACL vs the Panthers and is out for the year. Davis was the third QB for the Rams last year and Quinn was cut by the Jets on Monday.

Giants re-sign Lincecum to a two-year $35 million dollar deal

The San Francisco Giants have re-signed “The Freak”, Tim Lincecum, to a two-year $35 million dollar deal. Lincecum has had three straight losing seasons but is also one of only six Giants pitchers to win at least 10 games in six straight years.

Clemson QB Tajh Boyd gambling rumors

It was a tough weekend for Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd. Not only were Boyd’ No.3 ranked Tigers taken behind the woodshed by Florida State but Boyd’s name was also prevalent on the internet rumor mill for allegedly being associated with heavy NFL gambling debts. The allegations were looked into by the school compliance department and Boyd has been cleared. You can read this entire story by clicking here.

Kessler hat trick propels Leafs over Anaheim

Further proof that good things happen to good people, Toronto Maple Leaf sniper Phil Kessler rented a luxury suite for 24 child cancer patients at the Air Canada Center for Tuesday’s game with the Ducks. Kessler then went out and scored a hat trick as the Leafs came from 2-0 down to win 4-2 and snapping Anaheim’s seven-game winning streak.
