NBA Free Agency, Dwight Howard News, Brooks re-ups with Thunder

NBA free agency started Sunday morning at 12:01 AM. Deron Williams is the most high profile free agent available and he’ll be meeting with the Nets and Mavericks Monday before deciding between the two. New Jersey can offer Williams the most money and appears to have the inside track on Dwight Howard. Williams is a Dallas native and would be much closer to winning with the Mavs. Fellow free agent Jason Kidd will join Williams as a package deal.

ESPN is reporting that Dwight Howard has officially asked new Orlando Magic GM Rob Hennigan to trade him to the New Jersey Nets. Howard and Hennigan met face to face for the first time Saturday in Los Angeles. Howard opted-in to the final year of his deal with Orlando after the Magic decided to not move him during the season. He’ll be an unrestricted at the end of the 2012-2013 season if he is not traded.

The Oklahoma City Thunder and coach Scott Brooks have come to agreement on a four-year deal with better than $4 million a year per. Brooks had held firm against signing a three-year $11 million dollar deal. The new deal would run concurrently with Kevin Durant’s current deal which ends in 2016. Brooks is 174-125 (.582) since taking over for P.J. Carlisimo in 2008.

Kevin Garnett will return to the Celtics, reportedly on a two-year deal. KG was contemplating retirement but chose to return for an 18th season plus. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Garnett will be able to mentor the Celtics two rookie big men, Jared Sullinger and Fab Melo, taken in the first round of Thursday’s NBA draft.

Keselowski rolls to win at Kentucky

Brad Keselowski grabbed the lead at Kentucky with 55 laps left in the race and drew off from the rest of the field to become the first driver to win three races this season. Kasey Kahne finished second with Denny Hamlin taking home the bronze. Junior, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth, Truex Jr, A.J. Allmendinger, and Kyle Busch rounded out the top ten. Matt Kenseth still leads the Chase, 11 points better than Dale Earnhardt Jr, and Jimmie Johnson.

Keselowski is much the best in the Blue Grass

Tiger just a shot back at Congressional

Tiger Woods shot a Saturday 4-under par 67 to finish T2 after three rounds at the AT&T National at Congressional. Woods trails Brendon de Jonge by a shot, second round leader Hunter Mahan is just two shots back after shooting a Saturday 73. In all there are 18 golfers within five shots heading into Sunday’s final round.

The Mets shut out the Dodgers again

For the fifth time in six games, the Los Angeles Dodgers failed to score a run. Friday, R.A. Dickey whitewashed the Bums on three hits over eight innings. Saturday, it was Johann Santana’s turn to blank the Dodgers on three hits over eight innings. Ike Davis did the offensive damage with a 3-run shot in the 6th, his 11th round-tripper of the year. Santana improved to 6-4 with the win. The Dodgers are 1-11 in their L12 with no end in sight.

Hanson, Teeth of the Dog, Camp Victory run big

Hanson was considered one the nation’s top three-year-olds in the spring. While his Triple Crown season left something to be desired, he seems to have found his form and confidence blowing out five others in the $250,000 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows. Last year’s two-year-juvenile champion won by open lengths in covering the mile and a sixteenth in 1:42:01 as the prohibitive 1/9 ($2.20) favorite. Several other also ran Triple Crown colts met in the Grade II Dwyer at Belmont and it was Teeth of the Dog holding off a late challenge of Fast Falcon to win as the even money favorite. Teeth of the Dog covered the 1 1/16 in 1:41:43 as the colts prepare for late summer classic like the Haskell and Travers before meeting the older horses in the fall.
