Ohio State stop Michigan, and then there were none

Michigan’s 56-53 loss to Ohio State Sunday not only knocked the Wolverines from the ranks of the unbeaten, it will probably also deny them their first No.1 ranking in the polls in more than 20 years. After Duke lost to North Carolina State on Saturday, the then undefeated Wolverines needed only to take care of business against their most hated rivals to claim their first No.1 ranking since the Fab Five days of November 1992 but ….. Ohio State got off to fast start and took a 34-22 point lead to the half before putting down a late Michigan rally. Deshaun Thomas led Ohio State with 20 points while Trey Burke had 15 for Michigan.

Dwight Howard returns as the Lakers spank the Cavs

Dwight Howard scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Lakers ended a six-game losing streak with a 113-93 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Howard had missed L.A.’s last three games with a partially torn labrum in his shoulder. Kobe Bryant chipped in with 23 points as the Lake Show stopped it’s longest losing streak since 2007. Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters both had 15 points in defeat for the undermanned Cavs.

Derek Jeter to start working out

Three months after surgery on his fractured left ankle, Yankee captain Derek Jeter has had his walking boot removed and is set to start workouts at the Yankees Tampa training facility. Jeter has not been cleared to run but rehabs by walking in an underwater treadmill. He is scheduled to resume baseball activities in late January. Jeter hit .316 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs and led the Major Leagues with 216 hits in 2012.

Bruin goalie Tim Thomas will sit shortened season

Last year, Boston Bruin goalie Tim Thomas indicated that he wanted to take some time off to spend some time with his family. It looks like Thomas will stick to his plan and not return to the Bruins for the shortened season.

From The Boston Globe:

As of 10 a.m. Monday, Tim Thomas will be considered a suspended player. Thomas’s $5 million annual hit will count toward the team’s cap. Via agent Bill Zito, Thomas informed Chiarelli that he still wants to play in 2013-14. The Bruins can toll Thomas’s contract forward one year. It’s doubtful the Bruins will welcome Thomas back.

The shortened 48-game NHL season will resume Saturday, January 19th
