Spain moves on with 2-0 win, England vs. Italy today
At Euro 2012, Xavi Alonso celebrated his 100th cap for Spain with a brace as Spain cruised by France 2-0 and into an all Iberian semifinal matchup with Portugal. Alonso scored on a back-post header to open scoring in the 19th minute and sealed the deal with a late penalty. In today’s final quarterfinal matchup, old rivals England and Italy meet for the first time in a decade with the winner to face Germany in Thursday’s semi. The game opened with the Italians as small -125 favorites but the game has been bet to pick’em. The total is two flat with the Over +110 and the Under -140. MLB Diamond Dust
The Colorado Rockies jumped on Texas starter Colby Lewis early and often, building an 11-1 lead by the fifth inning and then hanging on for an 11-7 win. The Rangers saw their seven-game winning streak go down the tubes while the struggling Rockies improved to 3-13 in their L16 games. Colorado got home runs from Will Nieves and Dexter Fowler, Nelson Cruz hit to bombs in a losing efforts for Texas.
In a battle of MLB also rans, 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner Felix Hernandez pitched and batted the Seattle Mariners past the San Diego Padres 5-1. Hernandez pitched seven innings of one-run six-hit ball striking out 10 and walking just one to pick up his fifth win. King Felix helped his own cause with a two-run double.
NHL: Penguins deal Jordan Staal
After turning down a 10-year contract extension on Thursday, the writing was on the wall. Woth unrestricted free-agency looming after next season, the Pittsburg Penguins had little choice but to deal fan favorite Jordan Staal. So they did … sending Stall to the Hurricanes for the 8th overall pick in the draft, center Brandon Sutter and defenseman Brian Dumoulin. The trade happened on his wedding day and reunites him with older brother Eric.
Ambrose wins pole at Sonoma
Marcos Ambrose won the second pole of his career and his second pole in a row winning qualifying for this week’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma. This is the first of two road courses this year. Nine-time road course winner and five-time winner at Sonoma, Jeff Gordon will start on the outside of the first row. Jimmie Johnson, Greg Biffle, Martin Truex Jr, Clint Bowyer, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth, and Ryan Newman round out the top ten. Ambrose is the 4/1 favorite with Tony Stewart and Gordon both 6/1. Juan Pablo Montoya is 8/1 in a race where “specialists” usually run well.
MMA Recap: Gray Maynard and Rich Franklin feature winners
The UFC put two more big cards in the books with UFC on Fox 4 from Atlantic City on Friday and UFC 147 from Jornalista Felipe Drumond Stadium, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. At Fox 4, Gray Maynard worked out a split decision win over Clay Guida to thrust himself back into the lightweight title picture. Maynard stalked Guida the entire fight while “The Carpenter” circled holding “The Bully” at bay with a snapping jab. In the end, Maynard did a lot more promt the action winning 49-48, 48-49, and 49-48 on the scorecards. Sam Stout, Brian Ebersole, and Cub Swanson were the other winners on the main card. In Brazil, Rich Franklin was able to survive a near knockout en route to a unanimous decision victory over local legend Wanderlei Silva. “The Axe Murderer” floored Franklin with a combination towards the end of the second round and swarmed but was unable to finish before the bell, effectively punching homself out. Silva mounted no offense the rest of the way and Franklin cruised to a 49-46, 48-46, 49-46 win. Fabricio Werdum knocked out Mike Russow in the heavyweight co-feature.
Arizona and South Carolina square off in College World Series
Defending two-time CWS champion South Carolina takes on three-time NCAA baseball champion Arizona in Game I of today’s best-of-three College World Series. The Wildcats went through their bracket unbeaten and hope to claim their first baseball title since 1986. South Carolina is -170 to win the series with Arizona +130 on the takeback.
