Denver punches it’s playoff ticket, DWade dislocates finger
The Nuggets clinched a playoff spot in the NBA’s Western Conference leaving a three-way battle for one remaining spot. Denver beat Phoenix 118-107 to lock up a probable seven-seed and a first-round meeting with either San Antonio or Oklahoma City. Ty Lawson led the Nuggets with 29 points and 10 assists. The Utah Jazz had their biggest win since the Stockton/Malone days beating Orlando 117-107 in overtime. With two games to play, Utah has a one game lead over Phoenix and Houston for the eight seed in the West. Phoenix visits Utah on Tuesday.
Lebron and Chris Bosh sat out the Heat’s 86-84 home loss to the Wizards. DWade lasted just three minutes before dislocating his left index finger. Doctors reset the finger, X-rays were negative, and Flash will be sore but ready to go for the playoffs.
In other games around the “Association”, Philadelphia dumped Indiana 109-106 on OT to keep pace with the Knicks and pretty much put the dagger in Milwaukee. The Bucks got 30/6/6 from Brandon Jennings in a 106-95 win over New Jersey to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. Chicago beat Dallas 93-83 holding the Mavs to eight first-quarter points. Houston and Memphis were the other winners on the eight game card.
Blues eliminate Sharks ….. Caps, Sens, Panthers, and Blackhawks win
St Louis trailed 1-0 with just 10 minutes to play but scored three times late to close out San Jose four game to one. The Blues dominated the defensive series holding the Sharks to just eight goals in five games. Florida and Ottawa both pitches shutouts to take 3-2 leads in their respective series. The Senators blanked the Rangers 2-0 and the Panthers whitewashed New Jersey 3-0. The Washington Capitals got a soft goal at 18:33 of the third beat Boston 4-3 and take a 3-2 lead in that series. In the night’s best game, the Chicago Blackhawks beat Phoenix in OT to extend that series, Phoenix still leads 3-2.
There are free elimination games in today’s NHL playoff action. Pittsburg is a -125 favorite at Philly with the total seven flat and the under -120. The Flyers lead the series 3-2 after taking a 3-0 lead. Note the 12:05 PM EST start. Boston is a small -115 favorite to send their series with the Caps to seven games. The total is five flat for the 3:05 PM EST start. Vancouver is a -165 home favorite over the Kings who lead that series 3-1. The total is five flat with the under -120. The Canucks have made the switch to Corey Schneider in goal.
Humber throws the season’s first No-No
On a day where Halladay, Kershaw, Verlander, Strasburg all pitch, it’s Philip Humber who gets a perfecto. In 29 major league starts, until Saturday, the 2004 Mets first-round pick had never thrown a complete game. In 120 minor league starts, he had mustered only four complete games. Saturday, it took Phil Humber just 96 pitches in throwing the MLB’s 21st perfect game as the WSox blanked Seattle 4-0.
Suicide advisories were posted in Fenway Park when the Boston Red Sox blew a 9-0 lead in the sixth, losing to the Yankees 15-9. It was the second time in MLB history that a team led by nine runs and lost by six or more runs. How about this line for the the BoSox bullpen: 3 IP, 12 H, 14 R, 13 ER, 5 BB, 2 K. Yowzaaaaaaaaa
Jones dominates Evans at UFC 145
Jon Jones used his superior reach to pick Rashad Evans apart in a dominating defense of his light-heavyweight title at UFC 145 in Atlanta. Jones set the tone of the fights in the first with some murderous leg kicks and completely took over the fight in the second with some punishing elbow strikes. Ben Rothwell was rewarding for coming into his fight in the best shape of his career with “Knockout of the Night” honors after his early KO win over Brandon Schaub. The “Submission of the Night” bonus also went to a heavyweight as Travis Browne made Chad Griggs tap with an arm triangle. “Fight of the Night” honors and it’s 65K bonuses went to Eddie Yagin and Mark Hominick. Yagin won the bloodbath by split decision.
Real Madrid beats Barcelona in “El Classico”
Real Madrid grabbed a stranglehold on the La Liga title after their 2-1 win over Barcelona in Saturday’s edition of “El Clasico”. The Whites grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the 17th minute after a scramble in front of the Barca goal. After Gomez of Barca tied it in the 70th minute, it was Cristiano Ronaldo on a breakway just three minutes lates to notch the winner from a tough angle. Real Madrid leads Barca by seven points with both teams having just four to play. Ronaldo took a one goal lead in the scoring race over Lionel Messi.
