Jimmie Johnson wins second Daytona 500, Danica 8th
Jimmie Johnson avoided trouble early and was much the best late when it mattered to take down his second checkered flag in Sunday’s Great American Race ….. the Daytona 500. Dale Jr was second, Mark Martin third, Brad Keselowski fourth and Ryan Newman fifth. Danica Patrick drove a solid race and was top five all day. She was clearly outdriven in the final half lap when she went from third to eighth in literally the final five seconds of the race.
College and NBA hoops News and Notes
The Big Ten just keeps beating itself up. On Sunday, it was the No.18 Ohio State Buckeyes knocking off No.4 Michigan State 68-60 at Columbus. The Spartans led by six after 20 minutes but the Buckeyes rolled to the win with a 43-29 second half. Aaron Craft, the Bucks highly regarded defensive specialist, got it going on the offensive end to lead Ohio State with 21 points.
In Sunday’s NBA action, the Thunder held the Bulls to their worst shooting night of the season with a 102-72 win over Chicago. Miami used a big fourth quarter to turn back the Cavs for their 11th straight win. The Lakers climbed to within one game of .500 with a 103-99 win at Dallas. The Spurs ended their big mile nine-game rodeo road trip at 7-2 with an easy win at Phoenix.
Kuchar downs Mahan to take Match Play Crown
Matt Kuchar battled defending champion Hunter Mahan through cold windy conditions to win the final of the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship 2 & 1. With the win, Kuchar also took down the $1.5 million dollar first prize. Early in the day, Kuchar eliminated Jason Day while Mahan was disptaching 2011 winner Ian Poulter. Day beat Poulter 1-up in the consolation.
Yanks Granderson out 10 weeks with broken arm
Yankee power hitting outfielder Curtis Granderson will miss the first 10 weeks of the season after breaking his forearm when his was hit by a pitch in his first spring training at bat. Granderson had 43 dingers last year, second only to the Tiger’s Miguel Cabrera. Granderson is expected to be out until mid-May and then rehab back into game shape. The Bronx Bombers, who were thin in the outfield anyway with just Brett Gardner and Ichiro returning, will like have to pick up a bat with some pop to help through the early part of the season.
Blackhawks point streak hits 18 games
The Chicago Blackhawks record breaking start to the season improved to 15-0-3 on Sunday after a 1-0 whitewash of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Corey Crawford stopped 28 shots to record the shutout and Andrew Shaw got the game winner on a wrist shot late in second period for Chicago who have now gone unbeaten in regulation in 18 straight games. The Hawks are home to Edmonton tonight and then have tough road game at St Louis on Thursday.
Orb runs down Violence at the Fountain of Youth
Orb took advantage of sizzling front end fractions to run down 3-5 race favorite Violence and win Saturday’s Grade II $400,000 Fountain of Youth States at Gulfstream Park. It was the highly touted Violence first career defeat and after the race it was disclosed that he had fractured a sesamoid bone in his right front leg and out of the Triple Crown series picture. SB3 will be taking you through all the prep race right up until ‘The Run for the Roses” on the first Saturday in May.
UFC 157 bonuses and post-fight presser
“Ruthless” Robbie Lawler made the most of his return to the UFC be capturing the $50,000 knockout of the night bonus with his first-round beatdown of Josh Koscheck. It was Lawler’s first fight in the UFC since an October 2004 loss to Evan Tanner at UFC 50. Veteran Kenny Robertson also got a check for 50K for his “modified leg crank” submission of Brock Jardine. The well deserved ‘Fight of the Night” bonus went to Dennis Bemudez and Matt Grice. Both fighter got an extra 50 large for the non-stop action-packed 15 minutes that Bermudez won by split decision.
