Wolverines and Cards square off for all the marbles

After three weeks of madness, it comes down to Louisville and Michigan for the men’s college basketball National Championship tonight in Atlanta. The Cardinals are four-point favorites and the total is holding steady at 138. The matchup features a dichotomy of styles as Louisville is No.2 in the nation in creating turnovers with their relentless press. The Wolverines are no.1 in the nation in protecting the ball. The Favorite is 10-3 ATS in the L13 national championship games. The Top seed is 5-1 against the points over that same time facing a lower seed.

While both teams can leave it on the floor tonight, it is a quick turnaround from Sunday night. Louisville played three subs more than 10 minutes in their come-from-behind win over Wichita State. Michigan played four of their starters 35+ minutes with no sub playing more than five minutes.

Fourth time is the charm as UConn thumps Notre Dame

It will be UConn and Louisville in Tuesday night’s ladies national Championship game in New Orleans. The Lady Cards continued their tournament roll by coming from double-digits down to beat Cal 64-57. UConn opened up a can of whup ass on Notre Dame, pounding the Irish 83-65. It was sweet revenge for the Lady Huskies who had lost to Notre Dame in all three prior meetings this year.

Knicks win again, Clippers punish Lakers to clinch Pacific

Carmelo Anthony scored 36 points including nine down the stretch as the Knicks won their 12th straight game with a 125-120 decision at Oklahoma City. New York led by nine at the half but needed some clutch hoops from Melo late to pull away after the Thunder has drawn even. Anthony also pulled down 12 rebounds and now has 167 points over his last four games. Russell Westbrook had 37 points in a losing cause for OKC.

The Los Angeles Clipper clinched the first division title in that franchises history with a 109-95 beat down of their Staples Center co-inhabitants, the Lakers. Chris Paul and Blake Griffin each had 24 points for Lob City while Jamal Crawford added 20 off the bench. Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard each had 25 for the Lakers who now trail Utah by a half game for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.

Verrazano and Goldencents win weekend Derby Preps

We’re just a month away from the May 4th Kentucky Derby and the top three-year-old colts are doing their final tune-ups before the first Saturday in May’s Run for the Roses. Saturday, top colts met on both coasts with the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct and the Santa Anita Derby at ….. Santa Anita. In New York, undefeated Verrazano and Vyjack met at the Wood. Verrazano was an easy 4-5 winner over fast closing Normandy Invasion with Vyjack in third. In California, 6-1 Goldencents stalked the leaders before taking charge in the stretch to hold off even-money favorite Flashback. All five horses should make the Derby barring injury although Normandy Invasion could be on the bubble depending on the results of this Saturday’s Arkansas Derby and Fountain of Youth. Leafs and Red Wings too meet in the 2014 Winter Classic

Better late than never. This year’s NHL Winter Classic that was scheduled to be played January 1st, 2013 in the 100, 000 seat Michigan Stadium (the football Big House) in 2014. The game will be played New year’s Day of 2014 and the NHL hopes that the matchup between two of the league’s original six will set the world record in attendance for a hockey game. A whopping 104,173 attended a game between the University of Michigan and Michigan State in this venue in 2010. Toronto and Detroit first faced off for a hockey game on Jan. 4, 1927, when the Toronto St. Patricks defeated the Cougars 2-1 in a game near Detroit.
