Howard gets 4-years $88 million, Josh Smith to the Pistons

While none of the announced deal reported to this point in NBA free agency can become official until July 10th, reports have Dwight Howard and the Houston Rockets agreeing to a 4-year $88 million dollar max contract. Howard will have the option to opt-out after the third year. Howard’s buddy, Josh Smith, has agreed to a four-year $56 million dollar deal with the Pistons.

Weidman stuns Anderson Silva with second round KO

Chris Weidman decked a clowning Anderson Silva with a straight left and then finished off “The Spider” with ground and bound until referee Herb Dean jumped in for the save at 1:08 of the second round. With the win,the unbeaten (10-0) Weidman became the new UFC welterweight champion. It was Silva’s first loss in the ring since 2004. His last loss was by a disqualification in 2006. Other winners on the main card of UFC 162 were Frankie Edgar, Mark Munoz, and Cub Swanson.

Jimmie Johnson completes Daytona sweep

Jimmie Johnson won his fourth race of 2013 and completing the first Daytona sweep since 1982 taking the checkered flag at Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400. In a wild race that featured two massive wrecks in the green/white/checker finish, Johnson beat Tony Stewart to the line to complete the first 500/400 Daytona double since Bobby Allison 31 years ago. evin Harvick, Clint Bowyer and Michael Waltrip completed the first five.

Butler names new head coach

Less than 72 hours after losing HC Brad Stevens to the Boston Celtics, the Butler Bulldogs have named former star PG Brandon Miller as their new head coach. Miller, a 2003 Bulldog alum, spent six years as an assistant to Ohio State’s Thad Matta (also a Butler alum) and last year as an assistant to John Groce at Illinois.

American brothers complete “Bryan” slam

Bob and Mike Bryan, 35-year-old identical twins from California, won their third Wimbledon Men’s doubles title on Saturday and now own all four tennis Grand Slam titles. The Bryans defeated win Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 for their 15th Grand Slam win and are now the first pair in the open era to own all four Grand Slam titles.

Chase the “bat dog” retires after cancer diagnosis

Chase “the bat dog” has been officially retired as the bat dog for the AA Trenton Thunder. The 13-year-old golden retriever was well known for retrieving bats and bringing them back to the dugout and for running bottles of water to the umpires. Chase has recently battled arthritis and a form of blood cancer. Thousands turned out to say goodbye on “Bring Your Dog Day” and the first 2000 even got Chase bobbleheads.
