The Texas Rangers spanked the Angels 10-3 on Wednesday to complete a three-game sweep of the Halos. Coupled with Oakland’s 6-5 loss at Cincinnati, the Angels and A’s are now tied atop the American League West.

New York Mets super rookie Matt Harvey tossed his first complete game shutout in a 5-0 whitewash of the Colorado Rockies. Harvey struck out six and walked none in the four-hitter.

Prince Fielder’s two-run double in the 14th inning propelled the Detroit Tigers to their 11th straight win, a 6-5 decision over Cleveland. With the win, the Tigers extended their lead over the Tribe in the A.L. Central to six games.

CBSSports is reporting that the Philadelphia Phillies and veteran second baseman Chase Utley have agreed on a two-year extension worth $27 million. Utley was set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

A-Rod files his formal appeal

The Major League Baseball Players Association formally appealed Alex Rodriguez’s 211-game suspension Wednesday, sending the case to an independent arbitrator.The MLBPA and A-Rod himself offered no further comment.

Six NFL preseason games kick tonight

The NFL preseason starts for real tonight with all 32 teams in action over the next four nights. In rotation order ….. the Baltimore Ravens travel to Tampa Bay to meet the Bucs. Tampa Bay is a -3 point favorite with the total currently sitting at 35 1/2. Temperature at game time is expected to be 85 and there is a 30% chance of thunder showers. The Redskins face the Titans in Nashville. Tennessee is also a -3 favorite and the totals also 35 1/2. The game time temp is expected to be 83 with a 60% chance of showers. St Louis is in Cleveland to face the Browns. The homies are -4 and the high/low currently sits at 35. Game time temp is expected to be around 75 with a 30% chance of rain. The Atlanta Falcons are a field goal fave over Cincinnati with the over/under sitting at 37. Expect perfect conditions at the Georgia Dome. In a possible Super Bowl preview, San Francisco is -3 over Denver with the total 35. Weather is sunny and 65 at kick. In the night’s finale, Seattle is -2.5 over San Diego at Qualcomm Stadium. The total is 35 1/2 with perfect weather.

The final major of the year has teed off and as of this writing, Robert Garrigus is the early leader at -3 through four holes. Tiger Woods is just about to tee off in search of his sixth win of the year and first major in five years.

Wolves Muhammad kicked out of rookie program

Minnesota rookie Shabazz Muhammad was sent home from the NBA’s Rookie Transition Program for violating a rule and bringing a female guest into his hotel room. The four day program is a series of seminars and guest speakers much like the NFL rookie symposium. Muhammad will be fined. The Miami Heat’s Mario Chalmers was tossed from the program in 2008 when the scent of marijuana was found permeating from his room.

Real Madrid beats Chelsea 3-1 behind Ronaldo brace

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals and set up the other as Real Madrid beat Chelsea 3-1 to capture the final of the Guinness International Champions Cup. A huge crowd of 67,273 watched in Miami as Real Madrid beat their former coach Jose Mourinho who moved on the ELP team.
