In an abbreviated Monday MLB card …. Andy Pettitte became the Yankees all-time strike out leader in the Bombers 10-4 win over the Minnesota Twins. Pettitte struck out Justin Morneau for his 1958th strikeout surpassing Whitey Ford. Yankee manager Joe Girardi also picked up his 600th career win. Bryce Harper homered in his first at bat off the DL and Jordan Zimmermann picked up his 12th win as the Nats spanked Milwaukee 10-5. The Chicago Cubs will have “Wrestling Mask” night on July 30th. NBA Free Agency Updates
Dwight Howard will meet with the Mavs and Lakers today as he completes his free agency tour. He met with Houston, Golden State and Atlanta yesterday. Howard reportedly told the Rockets, generally considered the front-runner for D-12’s services, that they would need to sign a third max player to go along with James Harden. The New Orleans Pelicans have reportedly offered restricted free agent Tyreke Evans a four-year $44 million dollar offer sheet. Andrew Bynum will not work out for teams during his free agency. Bynum sat out all of last year with a knee injury and never played a game for the 76ers who acquired him in a multi-team trade involving Dwight Howard.
Giants and Victor Cruz close to long-term deal
The New York football Giants and wide out Victor Cruz will reportedly have a long-term deal done by the start of training camp. Cruz signed a $2.879 tender sheet (which prevents him from holding out) a few weeks ago as a good faith gesture and it looks like the Giants are keeping their end of the bargain.
December 31, 2015 will be last day for anchor putters
The PGA will implement a ban on anchored strokes starting January 1, 2016. The ban sets forth adherence to the rules set forth by the United States Golf Association and R&A. To get a complete explanation of “anchored strokes” with a video showing the differences in putting styles, click here.
Mayweather could fight past Showtime deal
Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather is intimating that he may not be done fighting when he completes his 30-month, six fight $200 million deal with Showtime. Mayweather made the comments on the San Antonio leg of his 10-city media tour pimping his September 14th showdown against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. On a boxing side note ….. multi-belt heavyweight champion Wladmir Klitschko will defend his titles against undefeated (26-0) challenger Alexander Povetkin October 5th in Moscow. Klitschko is Ukrainian born but rarely ventures out of his home base in Germany.
Hernandez weeks away from the general population
Aaron Hernandez has been moved from an isolation cell in the medical ward to his own private cell. Hernandez is being held without bail on a homicide charge. Law enforcement stated that Hernandez will not have any “face-to-face” contact with other inmates.
