Parcells, Carter and Sapp head new NFL Hall of Fame Class

The Class of 2013 was inducted in the NFL Hall of Fame Saturday night. Bill Parcells, Larry Allen, Warren Sapp, Cris Carter, Jonathan Ogden, Curley Culp and Dave Robinson were the newest seven inducted. Rather than go through the accomplishments and bios which you can get anywhere, we’ll highlight some of the best lines from the induction speeches.

Bill Parcells on his bust going into the Hall of Fame …..

“When they put my bust in the hall tomorrow, I’d like to be somewhere near Lawrence Taylor so I can keep an eye on that sucker.”

Larry Allen on his first date with his wife …..

“On our first date, she cooked for me. She cooked me two chickens, french fries and baked me a cake and gave me a 40 ounce. I knew then, that was my wife right there.”

Jonathon Ogden on getting drafted by the Ravens …..

“I’ve often thought about that day back in 1996 when you drafted me instead of Lawrence Phillips, I think that worked out well for everybody.”

NFL opens today with the Cowboys and Dolphins

The NFL preseason opens today with the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio where the Miami Dolphins are -2.5 favorites with the total settled in at 33. The game opened Miami -1 and 34.5 but a mid-week infusion of Dolphin and Under money has moved the line to where it is currently. Tony Romo is not expected to play for Dallas. Remember to proceed with caution in preseason as it is a completely different animal. Due you due diligence regarding quarterback rotations and how long starters will be allowed to play, particularly offensive lines. Also remember that the traditional “magic” numbers of 3,4,6 and 7 are virtually meaningless in August as teams will often go for two of go for touchdowns rather than kick field goals to avoid overtime and senseless injuries. A “key” number in preseason is often plus or minus 1 1/2.

Scherzer wins 16th as Tigers blank White Sox

Max Scherzer pitched 7 2/3 innings of three-hit shutout ball as the Tigers shut out the White Sox 3-0 for their 11th win in 12 games. Torii Hunter, Jhonny Peralta and Jose Ingelsias provided the offense, all with solo home runs.

Aldo by TKO, Davis over Machida at UFC 163

Jose Aldo retained his featherweight title with a fourth round TKO of Chan Sung “The Korean Zombie” Jung at UFC 163. Also was winning comfortably before Jung dislocated his shoulder throwing an overhand right. In the co-feature, Phil “Mr Wonderful” Davis shocked homestanding Lyoto Machida with a highly controversial unanimous decision win. Most cards gave the fight to the Brazilian. With the win, Davis became just the second foreigner (in UFC) to defeat a Brazilian by decision inside Brazil.
