NFL News and Notes

Dog and Under players went to the cashier last night as the NFL season opened last night with the Cowboys beating the Giants 24-17 at the Meadowlands. It was all Tony Romo (22-29, 307, 3TDs) to Kevin Ogletree (8-114, 2 TDs) as Dallas moved the ball seemingly at will in the second half. DeMarco Murray chipped in with 131 yards on just 20 carries. Eli Manning was 21-32 for 213 yards and a touchdown but was victimized by several key drops by his wide receivers.

Art Modell, the long-time owner of the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens has died after a stroke at 87. Modell bought the Browns for $4 million dollars in 1961 and was one of the most influential owners pre and post merger. He served as president of the league between 1967 and 1969 and chaired the committees that negotiated the NFL’s first TV contracts and the first CBA with the players. Modell’s legacy was tarnished when he moved the Browns to Baltimore in 1996 and is thought to be the reason he was never elected to Hall of Fame.

Federer upset at US Open, Roddick falls to Del Potro

The US Open has had it’s first major upset and it was a monster. Roger Federer was eliminated in four sets by Czech Tomas Berdych 7-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
