Denver spanks Oakland as Manning throws for 374 and three scores

Peyton Manning continued his early season rampage through the NFL by completing 32-37 passes for 374 yards and three touchdowns as the Broncos rolled over the Raiders 37-21 on Monday Night football. The game was nowhere near as close as the final as Denver scored virtually at will. Manning now has 12 touchdowns in three game and is yet to throw an interception.

Pirates lock up first playoff spot since 1992

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds both locked up playoff spots with wins on Monday. The Bucs punched their ticket to the postseason with a 2-1 win over the Cubs. The Reds beat the Mets 3-2 in 10 innings. Both teams have identical records of 90-67 and trail St Louis by two games with five games to play. Both teams will be playing hard this week with the division championship still a possibility as well as home field in the wildcard.

MLB News and Notes

The Baltimore Orioles 21-year-old phenom 3rd baseman Manny Machado was carted of the field in Tampa Bay Monday after turning his knee running through first base on a ground out. Machado leads the majors with 51 doubles and hitting .286 in 155 games. He’ll have tests to determine the extent of the injury on Tuesday. You can see multiple vies of the play by clicking here.

Yankee ace CC Sabathia has suffered a second-degree hamstring strain and will miss the rest of the season. The Bombers are still alive but on a respirator for the final wildcard spot in the American League.

Around the horn in the NFL

Detroit Lions WR Nate Burleson broke his arm in two places in an early morning car accident and will requires surgery. Burleson will likely be put on IR and will miss the rest of the season. The 11-year veteran was Matt Stafford’s third option after Megatron and Reggie Busch and comes off his best game of the season, six catches and 116 yards in Sunday’s win over the Redskins.

You’ve probably heard that when Arizona Cardinal safety Rashad Johnson took off the glove on his last home after Sunday’s loss to the Saints, part of his middle finger never came out. Johnson lost a piece of his middle finger to the first knuckle and had surgery after the game to shave down the bone. Johnson posted a picture of the finger on twitter. Miller cleared to play for Ohio State

Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller has been cleared to play in the Buckeye’s Saturday showdown with Wisconsin. Miller has missed the last two games after tweaking a knee but Ohio State didn’t miss a beat with fifth-year senior Kenny Guiton calling the shots. Braxton was a front runner for this year’s Heisman Trophy but no player has won the award missing more than one game since Notre Dame’s Angelo Bertelli in 1943. Bertelli was not hurt, he was taken by the draft.

Shaq buys minority piece of the Sacramento Kings

The “Shaqamento” Kings era began yesterday with the big man acquiring a minority ownership of the Kings. Among Shaq’s duties will be mentoring DeMarcus Cousins who is close to signing a long term extension with the team.

Charity cyclist hit by a truck

A 24-year-old Maryland cyclist attempting a 10,000 mile ride to all 30 MLB ballparks will have to put the final leg of his journey on hold after being hit by a truck. Jacob Landis was attempting to raise $1 million dollars for hearing impaired children. Landis received a cochlear implant as a 10-year-old. Landis was hits by the side view mirror of a truck in Polk County Florida and suffered a concussion and multiple facial fractures. Marlin Park was the final stop of his 10,000 mile odyssey.
