Rays advance to ALDS vs BoSox with 4-0 wildcard win at Cleveland

Alex Cobb and three relievers shut out Cleveland on nine hits as the Tampa Bay Rays advanced to an ALDS series matchup with Boston after beating the Indians 4-0. Delvin Young produced the only offense Cobb and the Rays would need with a third inning solo home run. The Rays now travel to Boston to meet the Red Sox, Matt Moore vs Jon Lester. Yanks make an offer to Girardi

The New York Yankees and representatives of manager Joe Girardi have met to see if the Bombers can keep Girardi in New York. Girardi has managed the Yankees since 2008 and won a World Series title in 2009. He has three rings as a Yankee player as well. The Chicago Cubs are reportedly very interested in Girardi. The former catcher played his college ball at Northwestern and is an Illinois native.

Bills/Browns kick off NFL Week Five

The 2-2 Buffalo Bills travel to Cleveland to take on the Browns in tonight’s NFL TV Thursday nighter. The Browns opened at -3 with the total set at 41. The Browns have been bet up to -4 with the high/low down a half click to 40 1/2. There is a 40% chance of light showers with temperature at game time around 70.

The Browns are 2-0 with Hoyer at the controls but have been unable to run the ball. Cleveland has gained 745 yards in two games under Hoyer after gaining just 550 yards with Weeden. The Bills are 2-2 on the year and rush the ball at a 120 ypg clip. The are +4 in turnovers but lost their only road game 27-20 at Jets despite being +2 in takeaways. The Bills are 4-10-1 in their L15 as a road dog. The Browns are 4-10-1 in their L15 as a home favorite.

NFL News and Notes

Raider quarterback Terrelle Pryor has been ruled good to go and will start for the Raiders Sunday vs San Diego. Pryor missed last week’s games with the Redskins because of a concussion but has passed all the appropriate protocols. Matt Flynn has been demoted to the clipboard and may have taken his last snap as a Raider.

The Bucs are mulling suspending deposed quarterback Josh Freeman. The ex-Kansas State first round draft pick has been fined twice in the last month for conduct detrimental to the team. There is lots of bad blood here and it is clear that Tampa Bay would like to get rid of Freeman without paying the near $6 million he is due for the rest of the year.

Air Force at Navy a go for Saturday

Our government is shut down but it looks like our service academies will able to play as scheduled on Saturday. Air Force will definitely play at Navy on Saturday and the decision on the Army/Boston College game is expected today. The teams will play on the provision that all of the travel money will come from private rather than public funds.

Bama suspends safety indefinitely for violation of team rules

Top ranked Alabama has suspended starting safety HaSean Clinton-Dix indefinitely for an unspecified violation of team rules. Through four games this season the free safety has 24 tackles and two passes defended. During the 2012 season Clinton Dix had 37 tackles and four interceptions in 14 games.

Fiery Patrick Roy win NHL coaching debut

Patrick Roy hasn’t changed much since his days as a premier goaltender in the NHL. Roy won his coaching debut on Wednesday as the Colorado Avalanche rolled Anaheim 6-1. Roy near went through the glass partition seperating the team benches after taking exception to a squirmish in front of the benches after the final whistle had sounded.
