Spain first Euro finalist, Germany vs Spain today
Spain is the first team to punch their ticket into Sunday’s Euro 2012 final by virtue of their 0-0 (4-2) penalty kick victory over Portugal. After a tightly played first 90 minutes, both teams open up the offenses in the extra time with Portuguese goalie Rui Patricio making two fine saves in the final 15 minutes to send the match to penalties. After both teams were stopped in the first round, both teams were perfect until the Portuguese fourth round when Bruno Alves hit the crossbar. Cesc Fabregas, who came on as a substitute in the second half, drilled the winner. Cristiano Ronaldo, arguably the world’s best player was scheduled to shoot fifth but never got the chance with the match already decided. Spain meets today’s Germany/Italy winner. The Germans are -300 moneyline favorites with the Italians +210 on the takeback. The total is two flat with the Over -140 and the Under +110. Watch and Win on ESPN starting at 2:45 PM EST.
More NBA Draft Buzz
Baring the world ending, the New Orleans Hornets will take Kentucky big man with the first pick in tonight’s NBA draft. Thomas Robinson of Kansas, Bradley Beal of Florida, Micheal Kidd-Gilchrist of Kentucky, and Harrison Barnes of North Carolina are the likely next four taken and after that, it’s anybody’s guess. While this draft is considered deep and devoid of unknown Euros, the only probable “impact” player is Davis. The rest are just “nice” players. With the huge disparity between Anthony Davis and the rest of the draft, expect an inordinate amount of trades as teams look to move up to fill needs.
The Houston Rockets continued their quest for Dwight Howard by moving their pick at No.14 and Samuel Dalembert to the Bucks for the No.12 pick in the draft. The Rockets now have picks at 12, 16, and 18. With Orlando unlikely to move Howard before the draft, Pao Gasol and Atlanta’s Josh Smith for the contingency Plan B. The Bulls are reportedly looking to move up to get Harrison Barnes but are not willing to give up Luol Deng and change to get him. SP3 will come with it’s final mock draft at 12:00 PM Noon EST.

MLB Diamond Dust
There’s just no other way to put it, Wednesday, the Mets opened up a can of 17-1 whup ass on the Cubs. New York had it’s hitting shoes on as their first seven hits went for extra bases and became just the fourth team in MLB history to have four players in the same game have four or more RBIs. A night after seeing his 15-game hitting streak snapped, David Wright went two-for-three with five RBIs. Wright is now hitting .357 for the year.
The raging Yankees continued their hot play with a 5-4 matinee win over the Indians at the stadium. The Bombers may have won the battle but lost the war …. well at least their two left-handed war horses. Wednesday’s starter Andy Pettitte will miss the next two months with a broken fibula courtesy of a Casey Kotchman line drive leading off the fifth inning. Earlier in the day, the Yanks placed ace C.C. Sabathia on the 15-day DL with a first-degree groin strain. Sabathia, who hasn’t missed a start since April of 2006, will miss two turns thanks to the bridge with the All-Star game.
It’s pretty bad when you get swept in a series with your most hated rival. It’s worse yet when you get swept and don’t score a run against your most hated rival. That’s exactly what happened to the Dodger after getting blanked again by Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants who now own a share of first place in the NL West. “The Freak” pitched seven innings of four-hit shutout ball to notch his first victory since April 28th. The injury bug keeps biting the Dodgers who lost Andre Eithier early in the game with an oblique injury that could land him on the disabled list.
Today’s Miami Heat/Lebron James update
If you are jonesing for a Miami Heat or Lebron James update, not much going on today. To help you out, found a pretty cool clip of a BYU student who creates sculture out of balloons. It was either this or the Letterman interview. Check it out.
