It was an abbreviated college basketball card on Monday with just a few games on the slate. UConn snapped a two-game skid winning and covering against a tough West Virginia crew. In the hardwood version of Bedlam, Oklahoma State beat Oklahoma covering the small two point number. Cincinnati went into Georgetown as a 6.5 point dog but came away with a 58-54 victory over the Hoyas that will come in handy should the Bearcats end up as a bubble team. On the late show, St Mary’s dispatched San Francisco in WCC action 87-72 failing to cover the 17-point inpost.
Tonight kicks off the first ESPN Super Tuesday that features Florida State at Virginia Tech early and Georgia at Florida as the backend of your TV double-header. Other feature games on tonights card are Baylor at Kansas State, Ohio State at Illinois, and Wichita State visits Creighton is a battle of Missouri Valley Conference heavyweights. Looking to improve on Saturday’s 2-2, here we go.
La Salle -5 over Penn
Big 5 matchups (the Philly schools) have lost a lot of the lustre and prestige they once had in the 70’s and 80’s but these are still solid inter-city rivalries. La Salle has won four straight in the series and ten of 11 overall so the Explorers are flying high. La Salle is 8-2 ATS in all games this year. The Quakers are a 8-9 and a respectable 7-4 ATS but they are 0-7 vs Top 100 and not getting the big points here that they were getting earlier in their non-conference schedule. La Salle is off home wins over UMass and Xavier and can establish themselves as a player in the A-14 if they can get it done on the road. Lay the points.
Iowa at Michigan State Under 141.5
Tough game to call as far as the side goes. Iowa has won five of seven including games at Wisconsin and Minnesota but … the Hawkeyes have lost seven straight in Lansing by a combined 118 points, none by less than seven. Mich State has won 14 straight playing great defense holding their opponents to a tcik more than 59 ppg. Like all Rizzo teams, Sprty is relentless on the boards so Iowa is going to have a lot of one and dones. See Iowa in the 50’s and can’t even conceive of Mich State getting in the 80s’. Under the total is the way to go.
Notre Dame -5 over South Florida
The Irish have played amazingly well since losing best player Abromaitis for the season. South Florida has a habit of playing games that go right down to the wire, three of their last four wins have come by three points or less. The Bulls have lost five straight in the series and four straight in this gym. USF is just 8-19 as a road dog at this level. Notre Dame is 0-3 as a favorite this year but 8-2 vs teams outside the top 100. This is a very manageable number and this floor is one of the toughest venues in college hoops. Notre Dame 74-63.
Evansville +6.5 over Indiana State
The Purple Aces have covered five straight, four as a dog. The last two losses were by a combined three points, the last on a 40-foot buzzer beater. Evansville has played well against the Sycamores going 16-10 L26 in the series and have won three of the last four here. A lot more was expected of Indiana State who has started MVC play at 1-3 and avgg just 58 ppg in their losses. Evansville has a hunch of sharpshooters that have nailed better than 39% from beyond the arc which makes the backdoor wide open when you’re getting points in a game that figures to end in the 60s. Grab the points.
