Murray State and Creighton lead Bracketbuster winners, Michigan upsets Ohio State
Murray State and Creighton were the big winners over brackbuster weekend as mid-majors made their final bids to improve their RPI and resumes as March Mania looms right around the corner. The #16 Murray State Racers jumped out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back in a 65-51 victory over #21 St Mary’s. It was a signature win for the 26-1 Racers who pretty much locked up an at large bid should they fall in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. Creighton overcame a five-point halftime deficit to beat Long Beach State 81-79. The Blue Jays are a Big Dance lock while the 49ers are clearly a buuble team if don’t win the Big West tourney.
In other top bracketbuster matchups, Drexel out of the Colonial won their 15th straight game by blowing out Horizon leader Cleveland State 69-49. The Dragons held the Vikings to 27% shooting and did it on the road. South Dakota State hammered Buffalo 86-65. The Jackrabbits have a big time guard in Nate Wolter and and the other four starters all shoot 40% from behind the arc. Oral Roberts beat Akron by six and Old Dominion won at Missouri State in two of the other better matchups.
The #17 Michigan Wolverines upset #6 Ohio State 56-51 in Ann Arbor for the best win under Jim Beilein regime. The Wolverines will be a tough out if they shoot the ball well in the tournament. New Mexico crushed #11 ULNLV in The Pitt holding the Rebels to a season low 45 points. Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, North Carolina, Florida, and Wichita State were ranked teams that rolled. Baylor and San Diego State were ranked teams that went down on a non-stop action-packed Saturday.
(CBB) Michigan State -5.5 over Purdue
Michigan State has won four in a row and six out of seven but … Sparty is just 1-3 as a Big Ten road favorite. The teams met Jan 21st, an 83-58 MSU win at Lansing. The final was a bit misleading as Purdue had major travel difficulties that including sitting on a tarmac six hours in a blizzard and then having to bus up from Lafayette the same day of the game. Purdue had major off the court issues during the week with one starter thrown off the team after a bar fight, another starter is suspended. Mackey Arena is a tough place to play but Robbie Hummel and reserve Boilers circling the wagons is not enough to hang with the in-sync Spartans. Take Michigan State.
(CBB) Stanford -5.5 over Oregon
The Tree is 6-1 straight up (5-2 ATS, the loss vs Arizona) and in a true revenge spot here having lost at Oregon back in early January. Both teams are 18-8 and with the Pac Ten likely to get just one bid to The Dance, this is a key game in regards to conference tournament seeding. That said, the Quack Attack has never had success in No Cal and is currently working on a 1-13 SU (3-11 ATS) run in Palo Alto. Oregon has covered five straight that includes close losses at Cal and Colorado. The key is losses. The Cardinal continues series its series domination with a ten point win.
(NBA Philadelphia pick over Minnesota
The 20-11 76ers are in a flat spot right now going 2-4 SU (1-5 ATS) but prior were as good as it gets. Philly is 12-3 vs the points vs losing records and with several postive situational techs here including a perfect 4-0 ATS run after scoring 85 points. The Wolves are much improved but have done their best work on the road. Minnesota is 8-10 vs the points at home, just 5-9 as a favorite, and 8-14 ATS off a double-digit win. Philly is much the better team here and we just need them to win. Take the 76ers.
(NHL) Colorado at Winnipeg Under 5.5
Colorado is 5-2-3 under in their L10 games with all three pushes falling on five. The Jets have seen three of their last four go over the totals after an 11-1-1 run under the total. The shootouts were more likely a case of running into Pittsburg and Boston rather than a ful scale defensive meltdown. The Jets are 19-7 low vs opponents with losing record and 10-4 under after allowing 4+ goals. The teams haven’t met enough to determine a series MO but these are two offensively challenged teams that depend on defense and goaltending. We’re taking advantage of getting the generaous hook.
