Kansas State -5 over Southern Miss (12:40 PM EST tip)
Southern Miss does not shoot very well and against the strong boarding Wildcats, that’s going to mean one and done from the field. The Eagles are just 1-4 ATS this year on neutral courts and CUSA teams other than Memphis are 0-4 SU and ATS in this round since 2006. KSU has been pretty formidible in this round the L3 year winning by 13-20-5 points. The Cats struggled somewhat down the stretch going 6-6 in their L12 games but fit a couple of nice tech spots including a 9-4 ATS record after KSU allows 80+ in their prior. In the end, if KSU is interested and knocking down just a couple of shots, Southern Miss just doesn’t have the firepower to hang. Kansas State 75-57.
Montana +9.5 over Wisconsin (2:10 PM EST, tip)
In a perfect world for Wisconsin, the Badgers would just play some tough hounding defense and knocking down a couple of shots in a 55-51 type of game. The Bucky’s are 5-2 ATS in their L7 first-rounders. Montana has won 14 straight games and will come in ultra-confident here. The Grizz have been printing money for punters all year going 17-10 ATS in all games and 8-4 vs the points in their L12 tournament games. Neither team is very deep and both play their starters lots of minutes. Wisky will slow things down with their tortoise like pace and 30 second possessions. Teams just don’t cover near double-digit imposts scoring 50 points and that is what were are expecting here. Grab the points.
(CBB) Virginia Commonwealth +6.5 over Wichita State (7:15 PM EST tip)
This is a great game matching up two VERY GOOD similarly constructed mid-majors that have history with each other and in this tournament. Last year, VCU traveled to Wichita State during bracketbuster weekend and escaped with a 69-68 win that ultimately led to the Rams run to the Final Cuatro. The Shockers went on to win the NIT. Both teams play a lot of players and both teams are very deep. VCU is 9-1 ATS in their L10 NCAA tournamnt games and HC Shaka Smart is the hottest name in the coaching rumor mill. There’s not a touchdown difference between these two and the Rams have a big shot to win this straight up.
(CBB) West Virginia +1 over Gonzaga (7:30 PM EST tip)
The Mounties needed all their good will and tournament equity to get in this year. The star value of Huggie can’t be underestimated as well. This is a good matchup between two very physcal and very young teams. In fact, the Zags play just one senior in the first seven of Mark Few’s rotation. The Mounties are well tested and have historically done well in tournament openers winning five of their last six. The Zags always play a tough non-conference schedule and are battle tested but just 4-5 in their L9 as a Big Dance dog. West Virginia has struggled to score but if they do, they’ll be a tough out against just about anyone.
