Source: Colts to release Peyton Manning today

A 12:00 Noon EST news conference has been scheduled where the Colts will officially part ways with 4-time MVP Peyton Manning. While the split appears to be amicable, Manning was due a $28 million dollar roster bonus tomorrow so it’s hard to imagine that money is not a factor.

Manning had started 208 straight games for the Colts, second to Bret Favre’s all-time record of 297, before a neck injury put him on IR for all of 2011. Manning, who has had four neck operations in the last 19 months, has reportedly looked good in an aggressive throwing regiment the past week in Southern Florida and at Duke University. Manning wants to continue to play while Colts owner Bob Irsay would rather continue his franchise overhaul and start fresh with soon to be #1 overall draft pick Andrew Luck calling the shots.

Manning will have no shortage of suitors and will be able to pick wherever he wants to play. The Dolphins, Redskins, and the Cardinals are considered his most likely destinations. The Seahawks, Chiefs and Jets are also possibilities. Now that the the Manning/Colt split is a reality, there seems to be a groundswell in San Francisco for the 49ers to pull the trigger.

SP3s Tuesday Sports Recap: Detroit, South Dakota State, and Harvard all punched tickets to the Big Dance. Detoit won the Horizon Conference title with a win over Valpo. South Dakota State was taken to overtime by Western Illinois before winning the Summit League crown. This is the Jackrabbits first ever NCAA berth. Harvard clinched the Ivy League title and the bid that goes with it when Penn lost at Princeton. UConn and Seton Hall posted critical wins in the first round of the Big East tournament.

In the NHL, Sidney Crosby has been cleared for contact and could return Sunday in the Penguins home game against Boston. Crosby has two goals and 10 assists in eight games for Pittsburg. Crosby has been out since December 5th suffering symptoms of a consussion.

Chris Bosh returned to the Heat lineup and Miami walked over New Jersey 108-78. The Charlotte Bobcats won their fifth game of the year with a 10-point win over Orlando. Boston and Detroit beat the Rockets and Laker respectively in overtime. Atlanta won on the road at Indiana, Dallas beat the Knicks 95-85.

(CBB) Western Michigan -9 over Northern Illinois

The Broncos swept the season series from the Huskies winning 78-53 in De Kalb and 77-68 in Kalamazoo. Western Mchigan has won the last five in the series, four of the five by 9+ points. The MAC is not very good and is actually down by their lowly standards with Akron and Kent about the only two teams with a pulse. To their credit, the Huskies haven’t quit going 5-0-1 against the points in their last six games but … lets not forget that 5-24 Northern Illinois’ only non-conference win this year was against a scholl called Roosevelt. Take Western Michigan.

(CBB) Robert Morris +1.5 over Long Island

Not much seperates these Northeast Conference rivals. The teams split games last year before LIU won the rubber match 85-82 in last year’s NEC final. This year, 24-9 Robert Morris beat LIU 75-66 at home with the Blackbirds shooting just 3-16 from beyond the arc. This could be the Colonials year. Morris went 8-1 down the stretch, 6-1 vs the points, the lone loss coming to nemisis Quinnipiac. Robert Morris was toughened up early on with non-conference games against the likes of Memphis, Pitt, Duquense, LaSalle, and Cleveland State and that will pay dividends tonight with the money down. Wrong team favored here.

(NBA) Chicago -8 over Milwaukee

The Bulls and the Bucks both play their sixth game in nine days. The Bulls have won seven straight going 5-1-1 against the points. The Bucks are 3-9 in their L12 and just 1-6-1 ATS in their L8 home games. The Bulls are 16-7 on the road and 4-1 this year as a road favorite of 6-9 points. The Bucks are just 3-8 SU and ATS in the L11 of the series including 110-91 and 113-90 losses in February. Without Bogut, Milwaukee just can’t deal with the Bulls front court. Chicago by 15.

(NBA) NY Knicks/San Antonio Under 200.5

This is the Knicks third game in four nights while the Spurs have had two nights off, generally a huge edge for home favorites with winning records. The Knicks have lost their last three road games, two by doube-digits including last night in Dallas. Not real intersted in the side as Spurs have lost three of four themselves. That said, the Knicks are 14-4 under in their 18 roadies and 10-2 low on the nack end of B2Bs. The Spurs are 13-4 under in 17 home games and 20-10 low as a home fave of 6-9 points. SP3 thinks one finishes closer to 180 than 200. Play the Under.
