Stanford stuns USC, Virginia Tech also falls

It’s not really rocket science. If you go 0-12 on third down, rush for 22 net yards, and turn the ball over three times …. you simply will not win. That’s exactly what happened to No.2 ranked USC Saturday night in a 21-14 home loss to No.21 Stanford. Trojan QB Matt Barkley saw his Heisman Trophy aspirations take a major hit with a 20-41-2 performance for 254 yards and no touchdowns. Stepfan Taylor did most of the damage for the Cardinal rushing for 153 yards on 27 carries with a score.

No.13 Virginia Tech turned the ball over four times and gave up an uncharacteristic 538 yards of total offense in a 35-17 loss to previously 0-2 Pittsburg Panthers. Hokie QB Logan Thomas threw three first-half picks as Pitt jumped out to a 21-3 lead and never looked back. Tino Sunseri led an almost perfectly balanced Pitt offense to 250 yards on the ground and 288 through the air.

SP# will have a complete college football wrap up on Tuesday.

MLB Diamond Dust

The Los Angeles Dodgers have re-signed GM Nick Colleti and manager Don Mattingly to multi-year deals. Colletti has served as the Dodger GM since 2005 and was able to pull off the Adrian Gonzalez deal just last month. The Dodgers are just 7-12 since the trade trailing the Giants by 7.5 games in the NL West but are right in the thick of the wildcard race. It’s been a busy year for Colletti who also signed Matt Kemp and Andre Eithier to extensions and picked up Hanley Ramirez, Shane Victorino, and Joe Blanton before the trade deadline.

Canelo KOs Lopez in five, Martinez easy decision over Chavez Jr.

It was boxing night on Saturday in Las Vegas with two major fights at two different venues. At the MGM Grand Gardens, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez knocked down Joseito Lopez in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds before ending matters in the fifth. Sergio Martinez survived a knockdown with just 1:23 left in the fight to defeat Julio Caesar Chavez Jr by unanimous decision winning easily on all three cards.

It’s official, the NHL is now in a lockout

The NHL and the NHLPA could not come to an agreement on a new CBA before the Saturday night 12:00 midnight deadline so the league has officially locked out the players. This is the fourth NHL work stoppage since 1992 and one of the major reasons that profesional hockey has fallen off the map as a major sport that really matters. A real shame.
