Syracuse/Michigan heads National Semis, Tark/Pitino to HOF, NBA News and Notes, MLB Highlights + Friday Recap: Saturday, April 6, 2013

Wichita State/Louisville, Syracuse/Michigan Final Four today

Wichita State and Louisville and Syracuse/Michigan will square off today in the national semis to see who will play in Monday’s National Championship game in Atlanta. At 6:05 PM EST, Louisville opened as 9.5 point favorite, was bet up to 11 but has settles at 10.5 in most houses. The total has skyrocketed from 129.5 to 133. In the 8:45 PM EST tip second game, Michigan has pretty much been a two-point favorite over Syracuse. The high/low has also remained steady at 131.

Jerry Tarkanian finally headed to the Hall of Fame

With a career mark of 729-201, Jerry Tarkanian’s entry into the Basketball Hall of Fame has been a long time coming. The controversial Tarkanian took UNLV to four Final Fours winning the National Championship in 1990. His 1991 team that lost to Duke in the National semi-final team is considered by many to be the greatest college basketball team ever. Tarkanian also coached at Long Beach State and Fresno State.

Rick Pitino will also be part of the 2013 Hall of Fame Class that will be announced on Monday.

NBA News and Notes

Carmelo Anthony continued his scoring binge with another 41 points as the New York Knicks won their 11th straight game, a 101-83 mauling of the Milwaukee Bucks. In three games over the last four nights, Melo has scored 131 points (50,40,41) on 52-81 shooting from the field. He also grabbed 14 rebounds in the win.

The Nuggets have lost shooting forward Danilo Gallinari for the year with a torn ACL. The Italian had been averaging 16.2 points-per-game to go along with 5.8 boards. A tough break for a Denver outfit that is 16-2 over its last 18 games.

The Lakers edged Memphis Friday night to maintain their slight lead for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West. An interesting stat from that game. Dwight Howard went 3-6 from the foul line and has now missed 335 foul shots this season. That is more than Steve Nash (who did not play) has missed (322) in his entire 17-year career !!!

Friday MLB Highlights

Zack Greinke didn’t have his best stuff but it was good enough to beat Pittsburg 3-0 in his Dodger debut. Grienke pitched 6 1/3 two-hit shutout innings throwing 92 pitches but just 56 for strikes. Greinke struck out six and strangely enough did not walk a batter. Andre Eithier homered and Matt Kemp and Adrian Gozalez had RBI doubles for the run support.

The Cincinnati Reds hit six homers in Fridays 15-0 whitewash if the Washington Nationals. It was the Nats worse loss as a team since moving to Washington from Montreal in 2005.

Kentucky Derby preps Wood and Santa Anita Derby go today

The Kentucky Derby picture will become much clearer today after the running of the final two major prep races on the coasts. In New York, Verrazno and Vyjack square off in the $1 million dollar Grade I Wood Memorial. Both horses are unbeaten and Verrazano has been the kingpin of the Derby watch all spring. On the left coast, Flashback will be the heavy favorite in the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby. Hear that Ghost would have drawn major consideration here but was a late scratch Thursday. The two winners here will join Orb (the Florida Derby winner) and Revolutionary (the Louisiana Derby winner) as the early morning line favorites to win the May 4th Run for the Roses.
