Team USA spanks Spain 100-78 in final exhibition

Team USA beat Spain in the Gold Medal game in 2008 and the Spanish are considered the Americans chief rivals in London. Lebron/Kobe and Company sent a message on Tuesday, spanking Spain 100-78 in their final exhibition game before opening group play vs France on Sunday. Neither team was expected to show much but Team USA brought their A-Game, particularly on the defensive end where they held the Spaniards to 5-for-19 from behind the arc. Carmelo Anthony led Team USA with 27 points, Lebron James added 25. Pas Gasol led Spain with 19, Serge Ibaka chipping in with 16.

Steelers extend Tomlin through 2016

The Pittsburg Steelers like continuity at head coach where just three men have roamed the sidelines (Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, Mike Timlin) since 1969. Tuesday, the Steelers locked up Timlin with an extension through 2016, a no-brainer for Pitssburg considering that Timlin is 55-25 with a Super Bowl championship to his credit in his first six years at the helm. Terms for the three-year deal were not released.

MLB Diamond Dust

With the trade deadline looming on July 31st, expect a flurry of trades over the next six days as teams decide whether they’ll be buyers or sellers.

This just in … Miami has dealt former 2006 Rookie-of-the-Year plus reliever lefty releiver Randy Choate to the Dodgers for young starter Nate Evoldi and a minor league pitcher. A lifetime .300 hitter, Ramirez was batting just .246 with 14 homers and 47 RBI in 92 games for the Marlins and is owed $38 million over the final two years of his contract.

The Phillies and Cole Hamels have come to terms on six-year deal worth a whopping $144 million, virtually the exact contract given to teammate Cliff Lee who got $120 million over five years. Hamels deal is second largest contract ever to a pitcher only behind C.C. Sabathia’s seven-year $161 million dollar deal with the Yankees.

Alex Rodriguez is headed for a six to eight week stint on the DL after breaking his hand in last night’s 4-2 loss to Seattle. A-Rod was hit on the hand by an inside fastball from King Felix Hernandez and sustained a non-displaced fracture of his left hand and will probably not require surgery. A-Rod had hit his 644th career home run on Monday and was hitting .276 with 15 home runs on the year. Eric Chavez will likely fill in for Rodriguez at third.

A.J. Allmendinger was suspended indefinitely by Nascar after his second “B” urine sample came back positive for a banned substance. In accordance to the sanctioning body’s policy, Allmendinger will now be indefinitely suspended and given the opportunity to participate in the “Road to Recovery” program before applying for reinstatement. Allmendinger’s problems began when he was chosen to participate in a random drug test at Kentucky Speedway on June 29. The specific substance has not been revealed by NASCAR, as is the sanctioning body’s policy. Allmendinger and his team have insisted the positive test was for a stimulant.
