MLB News and Notes
Most of yesterday’s MLB news was made off the field …..
The New York Yankees are set to pay a record $29.1 million in luxury based on their $236.2 million dollar payroll. New York is taxed 50-percent on every dollar over the $178 million luxury tax threshold. This figure could still go up depending on whether the Yankees decide to pick up more salary in their playoff run.
The Dodgers and DBacks will open the 2014 MLB season with a two game set in Sydney, Australia. The March 22-23 games will be the first MLB games ever played Down Under and baseball tries to further extend it’s fan base.
The Boston Red Sox will honor HOFer Carl Yastzremski in front of Fenway Park on September 22nd. Yaz was the last player to win the triple crown before Miguel Cabrera turned the trick last year. Yastzremski retired with 3,419 hits and 452 home runs following the 1983 season and was inducted into Cooperstown five years later.
Suh will appeal 100K for block
Ndamukong Suh is generally considered the league’s dirtiest player and he has $243,000 in fines over his first three years to prove it. Add another 100K to that total for Suh’s illegal cut block Sunday vs. the Vikings. Suh chopped Vike center John Sullivan 20 yards away from the play during an interception return that cost Detroit a touchdown and could been a 14 point turnaround the Lions were intercepted on the next play. Watch the hit here and decide for yourself.
