Former heavyweight champ Corrie Sanders shot dead in a robbery

Former WBO heavyweight champ Corrie Sanders was shot and killed during a robbery at a restaurant in South Africa. Sanders was at a family celebration Saturday night when three armed robbers entered the restaurant and started shooting randomly hitting Sanders in the stomach. He died Sunday morning in a Pretoria hospital from his wounds. No arrests have been made and the murder investigation is ongoing.

Sanders shocked the world in 2003 by knocking out Wladimir Klitschko in one of the great upsets in heavyweight boxing. Sanders was known for his lightning fast hands and power punching but he’ll be remembered most second-round knockout of Klitschko in Germany as a 40-1 underdog. Sanders retired in 2008 with a 42-4 record, with 31 knockouts.
