Clippers come back from 24 down in the final 8:00 minutes for historic 99-98 win

Nobody would have blamed you if you went to bed early or turned the channel to “River Monsters” but if you did, you missed the greatest fourth quarter comeback in NBA history as the Clippers downed Memphis 99-98. An OJ Mayo trey at 9:19 left in the fourth put the Grizz up 95-71 but Memphis could manage just three points the rest of the way as the Clippers closed on a 28-3 run. Chris Paul knocked down two four shots with 24 seconds left giving the Clippers the lead. Rudy Gay had the ball the final 15 seconds for the Grizzlies but missed what would have been the game winning jumper.

San Antonio rolled Utah 106-91 in Sunday’s opener. Tony Parker had 28/4/8 and Tim Duncan 17/11/5 as the old guard carried the day for the Spurs. The Jazz were led by Paul Milsap’s 20 points and 9 rebounds but were hurt by 16 turnovers and just 42% from the field shooting.

The Lakers punched Denver in the mouth with a 27-14 first quarter and cruised to a 103-88 win over the Nuggets. Kobe Bryant had 31 points for the Lakers and Andrew Bynum had a rare 10 point, 13 rebound, 10 block triple-double. Bynum’s 10 blocks were an NBA playoff record. Danilio Galinari led Denver with 19 points, the Nuggets shooting an awful 32-90 (35%) from the field.

The Atlanta Hawks got out of the box quickly with a 31-18 first quarter and hung on to beat the Celtics 83-74 in Atlanta. Boston had cut the lead to 78-74 when there was a mad scramble for a loose ball at mid-court that eventually led to a Celtic loose ball foul. Rondo objected and was hit with a double technical, the second for bumping the referee which will likely result in a suspension. Josh Smith had a monster game for Atlanta with 22 points and 18 rebounds.

Rajon Rondo gets tossed, is suspension upcoming ???

Flyers draw first blood with 4-3 overtime win

Philadelphia Flyer captain Danny Briere scored two goals including the winner at 4:36 in overtime leading the Flyers to a 4-3 win over the Devils and take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal. Briere looked to have scored the winner just a minute early but instant replay revealed a blatant kick. There was no doubt about his blast from the top of the point through traffic to settle matters.

The Phoenix Coyotes held home ice with a 5-3 win over Nashville to take a 2-0 lead in that series. Five different players including Shane Doan and Antione Vermette (his 5th) put the biscuit in the basket for the Yotes. Pekka Rinne, the hero in goal for the Predators vs the Wings, has been unable to solve the Phoenix attack.

Tonight the Rangers are -155 home ice favorites over the Caps, the total is five flat -145. The Rangers won Game I 3-1 but 12 of the last 15 in the series (playoff games) have been decided by one goal. St Louis is a -155 home ice favorite in the late game as the Blues look to level that series at one apiece. The total is 4.5 with the over -125. The Kings won Game I 2-1 and are a perfect 4-0 on the road in this year’s playoffs.

Odom has reportedly moved back to Los Angeles, hired trainers, and will work on his game. Odom is the Dallas Mav inactive list after languishing through the worst year of career. With Dallas likely buying out Odom’s contract, he’ll be 32 and an unrestricted free agent for 2012-2013.

The Arkansas Derby winner and likely Kentucky Derby favorite Bodemeister worked five furlongs in a strong :59.48 on a muddy Churchill Downs track April 29 and has been declared ready to go. With Martin Garcia in the irons, the lightly raced son of Empire Maker galloped out six furlongs in 1:12.13 in his final prep for the May 5 Kentucky Derby. Though Bodemeister has only four lifetime starts heading into the Derby and did not race as a 2-year-old, trainer Bob Baffert said he believes the colt is improving at the right time. SP3 will have it’s Kentucky Derby preview and predictions on Friday.
