Current Liga MX Betting Odds and Lines

While not having the talent of Europe’s top leagues, Mexico Liga MX is the strongest soccer league in North America. According to attendance statistics, it’s also the most popular in the Western Hemisphere. Always review Liga MX betting odds in addition to other major soccer leagues.

The league was founded in 1948. 18 teams compete in the league each year. Liga MX holds two tournaments per year and crowns two champions. The Apertura tournament runs from July to December, and the Clausura goes from January to May. This format differs from the round-robin format utilized by European teams or a regular-season/playoff format used in other North American sports.

While contested purely in Mexico, Liga MX is actually more popular in the United States on a weekly basis than Major League Soccer. Liga MX matches on Univision averaged 845,000 viewers in 2021, while the MLS was at an average of 355,000 on ESPN and FOX. The league’s average attendance of around 25,000 fans is third among North American leagues behind the NFL and Canadian Football League.

Liga MX Bets

Soccer may be a low-scoring sport, but there are quite a few ways to place a bet on a soccer match. Some require more explanation than others, particularly the Asian Handicap.

Moneyline Bet

The moneyline is a simple bet where you try and predict the final outcome of the match. Wager on either team to win or choose a draw with a 3-way moneyline bet.

You can also wager on either team to win with a 2-way moneyline bet. With this bet, a draw would result in a push and your bet being refunded.

3-Way Moneyline Bet

The 3-way moneyline is one of the most popular bets due to draws being a consistent outcome in soccer. You can choose either team to win or bet on a draw.

Sportsbooks determine the likelihood of each outcome along with how the public might bet on a matchup to set the odds. If the public takes more action on one of the three outcomes than expected, sportsbooks will adjust the odds accordingly.

3-Way Moneyline Example

Guadalajara -165
Cruz Azul +450
Draw +330

In this example, Guadalajara winning is the most likely outcome. The minus sign before the odds indicates their status as the betting favorite. A minus before the number means you have to risk $165 to win $100.

A plus sign ahead of the odds indicates an underdog outcome. A bet on Cruz Azul to win is the most unlikely result according to oddsmakers. A Cruz Azul win would pay $450 on a $100 bet.

The odds for a draw in this case are +330, so bet $100 to win $330 in the event of a tie.

Note that 3-way moneyline odds can all have plus values. When this occurs, the favorite would be the lowest value.

In the following example, Pachuca is the +115 favorite. Atlas is +250, so an Atlas win is considered slightly less likely than a draw at +245.

Pachuca +115
Atlas +250
Draw +245

2-Way Moneyline Bet (aka “Tie No Bet”)

As we touched on above, the 2-way moneyline bet means there are two outcomes instead of three. This bet takes the draw out of the equation, as you would get your initial bet amount back in case of a tie. Hence, this bet is also called a 2-Way Tie No Bet.

2-Way Moneyline Bet Example

Guadalajara -425
Cruz Azul +310

Using the same game as our first 3-way moneyline example, you’ll see that you would have to risk a lot more to win the same amount on a bet for Guadalajara. That’s because a draw isn’t a losing outcome here.

Since a draw isn’t a negative for a bettor on the 2-way moneyline, you would have to risk more to back the favored team. In this case, it’s $425 on Guadalajara to win $100. If the match is a draw, you get your $425 bet back.

On the other side, you’re also protected against a draw by betting on Cruz Azul. The payout for a Cruz Azul win decreases to $310 on a $100 bet. Again, if the final result is a draw, you get your $100 bet back.

Possible Moneyline Outcomes
  • Puebla bettors risk $100 to win $245 at +245 odds. The implied probability for Puebla is 28.99%.
  • FC Juarez bettors risk $100 to win $94.34 at -106 odds. The implied probability for FC Juarez is 51.46%.
  • Draw bettors risk $100 to win $265 at +265 odds. The implied probability for Draw is 27.4%.

Totals Bet (Over-Under)

A totals bet is where oddsmakers set a specific number of goals to be scored in the match. You bet whether the final result will be over or under that number.

It’s important to note that the number set for a totals bet isn’t the number of goals oddsmakers think will be scored. Rather, it’s the number of goals oddsmakers think will cause equal betting on both sides of their line. This ensures a sportsbook doesn’t take too much of a loss on a certain result.

Totals Bet Example

Toluca 2.5 o -110
Puebla 2.5 u -110

Here, you would be betting on whether the total number of goals in this match will go over or under 2.5.

The -110 next to each number indicates the odds. You would need to bet $110 to win $100 in either case. Sometimes, oddsmakers will adjust the odds if they believe betting on one side will be heavier than the other.

You’ll notice that the odds here are the same for each side. In either case, you have to risk more than you can win. This $10 difference is called the vig or juice. Sportsbooks use losing bets to pay the winners.

When there’s an equal amount of betting on each side, the book gets a profit of $10 on each losing bet. Think of the vig as a service fee. It allows the sportsbook a better chance to profit and also ensures that your bet will be paid out in case you win.

Asian Handicap – Goal Line Bet (Soccer Point Spread)

The Asian handicap, or goal line bet, is placing a wager on the matchup with a point spread like a hockey puck line or baseball run line. Teams are typically favored by a half goal, but more lopsided matchups have been known to have spreads of 1.5 or 2.5 on the goal line.

Asian Handicap – Goal Line Bet Example

Leon -0.5 -110
Monterrey +0.5 -110

In this example, a bet on Leon would only be successful if they win by 1 or more goals.

Betting on Monterrey gives you two ways to win. If they win outright, you win. If the final result is a draw, you also win. That +0.5 goal line means Monterrey can’t lose by more than 1 goal. It includes the possibility of a draw.

If the goal line were -1.5 in favor of Leon, the bet would only be a winner if they were to win the match by two or more goals.

Asian Handicap Split Bet (Split Goal Line Bet)

Asian handicap split lines, or split goal lines, are written in quarter goal increments of 0.25 or 0.75. Examples include 0.25, 0.75, 1.25 or 1.75.

Whenever you see a split line, you’re actually making 2 bets at once. Your wager will be equally split between the two closest half line numbers with the same odds.

Asian Handicap Split Bet Example

Here’s how a $120 bet on América with a -0.75 -120 Asian handicap split bet works.

América -0.75 -120
Mazatlan +0.75 +100

The closest half number below -0.75 is -1, so $60 goes for América -1. The closest half number above -0.75 is -0.5. The other $60 goes to América by -0.5.

The -120 odds is what determines your winning payout. Remember, a minus value is how much you risk to win $100. In this case, you are risking $120 total to win a $100 split between two different lines.

If both bets win, you get $50 for each totaling $100. If one wins and one pushes, you get $50 plus $60 refunded. And if both lose, you get $0.

Asian Handicap Split Bet Detailed Example

How much you win or lose on the Asian handicap split bet depends on the game’s final outcome. Here’s how your bet on América -0.75 at -120 odds plays out.

América wins by 2 or more goals
Both bets win. América’s 2-goal victory is greater than each bet at -0.5 and -1.

The $120 bet to win $100 was split $60 each for América -0.5 and América -1. You win $50 each for a total of $100.

América wins by 1 goal
América by -0.5 wins, América by -1 pushes. In this case, América’s 1-goal victory is only greater than the bet at -0.5.

Your $120 bet to win $100 was split 2 ways for $60 on each line, -0.5 and -1. You win $50 on the bet against -0.5 and get $60 refunded for the push against -1. Total win: $50.

América draws or loses outright
Both bets lose. A draw means a 0-goal margin of victory over Mazatlan, and 0 is less than both -0.5 and -1.

You lose the $60 against -0.5 and the $60 against -1. Total loss: $120.

Liga MX Major Events

The Liga MX format is unique in comparison to other soccer-playing nations. Most European leagues have a regular season where each team plays the other twice – once home and once away. The team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned champion. The US MLS uses a playoff system that’s consistent with other North American sports. The Liga MX somewhat resembles the MLS system, except there are two separate “seasons” per year.

In the Apertura, the 18 teams play each other once. In the Clausura, the teams play each other again but the venues switch. For example, if Guadalajara hosts Atlas in the Apertura, Atlas will host the match in the Clausura.

After each 17-game season, the top-12 teams reach the playoffs, called the liguilla. The top-four teams receive a bye into the quarterfinals. Seeds 5-12 play each other with the four winners advancing.

Quarterfinal, semifinal, and final rounds are contested over two matches each. The total number of goals a team scores in both matches is called their “aggregate goals”. The team with the most aggregate goals wins. If the aggregate score is tied, extra time and penalty kicks are held to determine a winner.

Like most major soccer leagues, Mexico’s Liga MX typically relegates and promotes teams prior to the next season. However, there has been no relegation or promotion with Mexico’s Ascenso MX (second league) since 2020 due to financial concerns stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision will be revisited in 2025.

Additional Tournaments for Mexico Liga MX Winners

The winner and runner-up of the Apertura and Clausura are entered into the CONCACAF Champions League, the premier North American soccer tournament. If one of the teams reaches the final of both liguillas, Liga MX has a formula to make sure that four teams represent the league in the tournament.

Each July, the winners of the Apertura and Clausura tournaments face each other in the Campeon de Campeones. The matchup has more of an exhibition feel, unlike a typical season final that crowns a single champion. The league recognizes two champions, so this game is more for bragging rights.

Since 2018, the winner of the Campeon de Campeones has played in one more match. They square off with the previous year’s MLS Cup winner in the Campeones Cup to determine the top North American soccer club.

When to Bet on Liga MX Matches

Teams in Mexico typically play once per week. Different betting strategies dictate whether to bet on a match early or wait until closer to kickoff.

If you are really familiar with the teams, you can check the early odds to determine if there is value on a particular outcome. Review how one team has played against the other, recent matchup results, and player injuries. Jumping on a bad line can give you great value before the oddsmakers fix their mistake.

Waiting for the public to play their hand can also create value on the back end. Using this strategy, take note of the opening lines when they come out and look for any changes.

Liga MX Betting Odds For Fun

If you’re in it for fun and to win money, consider going against public opinion. Sometimes, contrarian betting can be profitable. Back a team that is getting more favorable odds closer to match time. This means that oddsmakers are trying to entice people to bet on that side because most of the public money is going in the other direction.

Waiting until closer to kickoff also gives you time for any late injuries or other news to develop that could affect the match result. So unless something really stands out to you when the lines for a match are released, you are likely better off waiting to place bets.

Popular Liga MX Teams

There’s a bit more parity among Liga MX clubs compared to the major European soccer leagues. A total of 24 clubs have won a Liga MX championship while 10 have won at least five. With that being said, there is a “Big Four” in Mexican soccer. Three of those clubs play in Liga MX.

América

Club América is one of the two clubs that share Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca, which holds over 80,000 fans. The team dates back to 1916. It holds the record for the most Liga MX championships with 13, as of 2022.

Club América also has the second-most runner-up finishes in Liga MX with 10. The club also has six Campeon de Campeones titles and has won the CONCACAF Champions League a record seven times.

The team’s most dominant stretch was in the 1980s when it won five titles. It won another three in the 2010s with the most recent coming in the Apertura 2018. Its chief Liga MX rivalry is with Cruz Azul, the other Mexico City-based team that shares its stadium.

The club’s all-time leading goal scorer is Luis Roberto Alves, who notched 190 tallies in 408 matches throughout the 1980s and ‘90s.

Cruz Azul

Cruz Azul is the other Mexico City club based out of Estadio Azteca. However the team had its own home grounds of Estadio Azul from 1996-2018.

Cruz Azul has nine Liga MX championships and 11 runner-ups as of 2022. It has only won two titles, however, after winning seven in a stretch from 1969-80. Its 2021 title was the first for the club since 1997. The team won its third Campeon de Campeones in 2021 and also has six CONCACAF Champions League titles to its credit.

The rivalry matches against América are known as the Clasico Capitalino (Capital Classic). Cruz Azul tends to have more of a blue-collar, working-class fan base, while América is more associated with a wealthy and powerful social class.

Carlos Hermosillo owns the club record with 197 goals overall with 168 coming in Liga MX competition.

Guadalajara

Guadalajara began play in 1906 and was a charter member of Liga MX in 1943-44. With its win of the Clausura in 2017, Guadalajara now has 12 championships as of 2022, just one short of América’s record. In addition, Guadalajara has nine runner-up finishes. The club’s best run of success was from 1958-59 to 1964-65, when it won six titles in seven years. Note that Liga MX didn’t split its season in two until 1996.

Guadalajara, nicknamed the Chivas (goats), plays in the fourth-largest city in Mexico. Their matches take place at Estadio Akron, which holds 48,000 supporters. It has a record seven Campeon de Campeones wins as of 2022, but none since 1970. It has also won the CONCACAF Champions League on two occasions.

Omar Bravo is the club’s all-time leading goal scorer with 135 in three stints with the Chivas (2001-08, 2009-10, and 2013-17. Bravo also has 66 goals with the Mexican national team to his credit.

Do Your Research

It’s estimated that 70% of all of the sports betting that takes place worldwide is wagered on soccer. With that much action, you have to do your homework if you are to discover advantages.

Using a site that keeps track of team and player statistics each year, like Footy Stats, can help you discover trends. Watch the matches and follow the news. Pay close attention to injury reports, suspensions, head-to-head records, and team performance in their most recent matches. How a team performed in their last three or four matches could provide more useful information than their statistics for the entire season.

Also, know what home-field advantage is worth. In all leagues throughout the world, the majority of teams will perform better at home than on the road.

However, away teams do win. By following these statistics, it can be easier to pinpoint when a team will win on the road. Doing your research and knowing when to take an away team can lead to big wins since the oddsmakers will typically give a bump to the home team.

Exploit Public Bias

Use public biases to increase the value of your bets. Given that 70% of all sports bets in the world are placed on soccer, you can be sure that a great many of them are being made on the favorite team to win.

In the Netherlands Eredivisie, the big three teams garner most of the betting action. As a result, oddsmakers will nudge odds in favor of teams opposing these clubs. A bet on an opposing team may offer higher value, especially if you determine they have a real chance to win.

Another popular public bias is on the totals bet. Casual bettors like scoring and want to root for goals. That means they gravitate towards taking the over. However, if your research suggests a lower number of goals than the current totals odds, grab the value that comes with betting on the under.

Mexico Liga MX Odds FAQs

How does Mexico Liga MX compare to other soccer leagues around the world?

Mexico Liga MX does not have the talent of Europe’s top soccer leagues, but it exceeds the MLS in both overall talent and even popularity in the United States. Viewership of Liga MX in the U.S. is routinely higher than MLS on a weekly basis.

What sets Mexico Liga MX’s format apart from other soccer leagues?

Liga MX breaks its season up into two parts (Apertura and Clausura) and crowns a champion in each through a 12-team playoff. Quarterfinal, semifinal, and final rounds are contested over two matches each. Aggregate (total) goals determine the winner with ties going to penalty kicks.

What is the Campeon de Campeones?

This is the name of the match where the winners of the Apertura and Clausura meet, but the game is more for bragging rights instead of crowning an overall league champion. The winner, however, then faces the MLS champion in the Campeones Cup.

How do you handicap Mexico Liga MX matches?

Like most soccer leagues, there are popular teams in Liga MX that fans and casual bettors gravitate toward. These are America, Cruz Azul, and Guadalajara. Studying these teams and their opponents carefully can lead to advantages for sharp bettors.
