Big Ten Win Totals

It is all about the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Big Ten in 2022. They are -230 to win the conference this year, while the next-best school is Michigan (+850). Ohio State’s win total over/under is an impressive 11 games while Michigan’s win total is 9.5. The Wisconsin Badgers come in at a win total of nine, and they are tied with Penn State at +1300 to win the conference. The Nittany Lions’ win total is set at 8.5.

Ohio State

The Buckeyes cannot be stopped, as they are looking to be the best team in the Big Ten. They are the heavy favorite in the conference, so it will be difficult to see any Big Ten team dethrone them. However, that means they have a very high win total of 11 wins. Ohio State and its tremendous offense will go on the road for just five games, and the biggest threat in the first 11 games is at Penn State on October 29. Then, the regular season finale will be against the visiting Michigan Wolverines on November 26. Take the over with the Buckeyes’ win total. They should go 12-0.

Michigan

So, how about those Michigan Wolverines and their win total of 9.5? They start with hopefully what will be some non-conference cupcake games with Colorado State, Hawaii, and UConn. Those are part of the four straight weeks at home to start the season. Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverines, who lost No. 2 pick Aiden Hutchinson to the NFL, have two big rivalry games, and they will be on October 29 (Michigan State) and November 26 (Ohio State). The game against the Spartans will be at home while the regular season finale will be at the Buckeyes. If Michigan State can win one of those two games, then betting the over should be a good idea.

Penn State

Penn State goes on the road to start the season, as the Nittany Lions will be in West Lafayette, Indiana to play at Purdue’s Ross-Ade Stadium on September 1. The Nittany Lions will get eight days between their first and second games, but the team will not get more than two games in a row at home this season. In 2021, Penn State had four consecutive home games, and they won each of those contests to start last season 5-0. The Nittany Lions reached No. 4 in the polls before a three-game losing streak, which included losses to Iowa and Ohio State. Hopefully, senior quarterback Sean Clifford can lead Penn State to a bounce-back year. It seems like the over of 8.5 wins is a decent possibility.

Wisconsin

The Badgers are coming off a 20-13 victory in the Las Vegas Bowl against the Arizona State Sun Devils. Wisconsin caught fire last season as soon as they traveled to Illinois. The victory in Champaign, Illinois began a seven-game winning streak and moved them to No. 14 in the polls. Paul Chryst has had a lot of success as the coach in Madison, but he will have a tough test at Ohio State on September 24. If a loss there does not trip up Wisconsin, then they have a chance at the over of nine wins. However, it will not be easy to take on Michigan State and Iowa both on the road later in the season.

Nebraska

At 7.5 wins, Nebraska’s win total is not daunting. Unfortunately, the Cornhuskers are coming off a 3-9 season in which they went 1-8 in the Big Ten, but Scott Frost is back for another season. He is in his longest-tenured position, but he may not be long for this job. Las Vegas is expecting a turnaround for Frost and Nebraska — with a win total of 7.5 wins — but can the Cornhuskers live up to the expectations? Nebraska should easily get to six or seven wins, but eight may be tough. If close games go Nebraska’s way, then the over can be attained.

Iowa

Iowa dominated the West Division of the Big Ten in 2021, as the Hawkeyes were the only team in the division to win 10 games overall and seven conference games. The Hawkeyes had some long winning streaks last season, but they faltered against Purdue and Wisconsin during the middle of the season. Then, the Big Ten Championship Game and the Citrus Bowl did not go their way. Those four games accounted for the only losses last year for Iowa. This year, the win total is just 7.5 games. A difficult schedule may make this tough, but Iowa has some breathing room even if both the Ohio State and Michigan games are considered losses.

What is a College Football Win Total Bet?

The season win total is part prop, part future hybrid. The plus and minus values assign odds to either side of the team’s win total line. This bet functions like a total bet. Choose either over or under the sportsbook’s line.

Example Michigan Season Wins

  • 9.5 o -121
  • 9.5 u -106

This win total line includes ½ games. That means no tie bets are possible.

Options:
Risk $121 to win $100 that Michigan wins more than 9.5 games. A result of 10 or more wins.
Risk $106 to win $100 that Michigan wins less than 9.5 games. A result of 9 or less wins.

How to Handicap a College Football Win Total Bet

Handicap a college football team’s win total using its upcoming schedule, likely starters, and any recently transferred players. Remember, you can bet under the sportsbook’s line if the win total is too high. If you believe a team is likely to win fewer games, bet under a win total line that looks too high.

Avoid betting on your favorite college football teams or others that you otherwise root for. “Fan bias” is real. It can cloud the judgment of even the most seasoned sports handicappers. Better to research and bet on a team you don’t know much about.

Always consider both sides of a win total line. The line is set by the sportsbook. It may move as betting action piles up on one side more than the other. The team doesn’t have to “win” the exact win total line. Instead, you’re deciding whether their actual number of wins will be more or less than the sportsbook’s line.

Finally, be careful when betting whole number lines like 7, 8, or 9. A tie is possible when the sportsbook doesn’t set a .5 half-win line. The good news: you get your bet back if the bet pushes. The bad news: you tie up money in the bet waiting for a result.
