Current WTA Tour Betting Odds and Lines

The WTA Tour, short for the Women’s Tennis Association, is the top-tier tennis league for women in the world. The WTA itself was founded in 1973 by Billie Jean King in response to men’s tennis creating the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals). Women’s pros began to use computerized rankings in 1975. Chris Evert was the first No. 1 ranked WTA player in history.

In 2022, the WTA Tour consisted of 46 events held all over the world from January to November. Major events include the four Grand Slams, the year-ending WTA Finals, and a series of WTA 1000 tournaments. Four “Premier Mandatory” events are held annually in Indian Wells (CA), Miami, Madrid, and Beijing.

In all, there are approximately 2,500 WTA members. The Grand Slams take the top 104 players in the rankings and then 24 others through various qualifying methods. Top-ranked players can play anywhere from a dozen tournaments to more than 25 per year depending on their age and other factors.

Tennis Bets

Tennis is one of the more popular sports to bet on worldwide. Daily matches take place around the world. That means there’s plenty of tennis to bet on year-round. There are a variety of ways to bet on tennis. We’ll discuss the most common below.

Moneyline Bet

Moneyline betting is the most popular tennis wager because of its simplicity. Pick either player to win the match.

Oddsmakers will determine a favorite and an underdog. The favorite will have a minus sign. The underdog will have a plus sign.

Moneyline Bet Example

French Open Final
Iga Swiatek -150
Coco Gauff +130

In this example, Iga Swiatek is a slight favorite to win at -150. This means you would have to bet $150 to win $100 if Swiatek is victorious.

On the other side, betting on an underdog means that you risk less to win more. For Coco Gauff, you would have to bet $100 in order to win $130. You’ll make more on a Gauff bet if she pulls off the upset.

Game Total Bet (Over-Under)

A tennis game total bet is where you try and guess whether a match will have more or fewer games than the sportsbook’s game total line. This bet is also called an over-under game total bet.

A tennis game consists of a sequence of points served by the same player. A game is won when a player wins four points under the love-15-30-40 system.

Note that a player must win a game by two points. So if they each get to 40, it’s called “deuce.” The game continues until a player wins two points in a row.

The first player to six games wins the set. However if both players have won five games, play continues until a player wins two games in a row. In most matches, a player must win the best of the three sets, or 2 sets total. In some men’s events with 5 sets, a player must win the best of five sets, or 3 sets total.

Game Total Bet Example

3-Set Match
Naomi Osaka 21.5 o -110
Serena Williams 21.5 u -110

In this wager, you’re deciding whether or not the match will have a game total that goes over or under 21.5. The reason a half-point is used is to prevent tie bets. Since a half-game in tennis cannot be played, the total games played must either go over or under the sportsbook’s line.

One other thing to note. The odds are the same for each side, also called an “even bet”. You might be wondering why you have to risk more than you can win on each side of the wager. The difference is what’s called the vig or the juice.

If there are an even amount of bets for each player, there will be some money left over after paying out winning bets. This leftover money goes to the sportsbook as a service fee for placing and guaranteeing your bet.

Game Spread Bet (Tennis Game Handicap)

The tennis game spread bet is similar to the point spread in sports like football and basketball. In a matchup where the moneyline bet might be lopsided, oddsmakers will use a game spread to try and equalize the two players and level the playing field.

Game Spread Bet Example

3-Set Match
Simona Halep +4.0 (+220 moneyline)
Ashleigh Barty -4.0 (-300 moneyline)

Here you can see how the moneyline odds translate to a game spread bed.

A bet on Barty requires her to win the match by more than four games. Suppose Barty wins the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Barty won 16 games to Halep’s 10. The six-game difference (16 – 10 = 6) would be a winning result for Barty at -4.

On the other hand, suppose Barty wins the match 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Barty won 17 games to Halep’s 15. The two-game difference (17 – 15 = 2) would be a winning result for Halep at +4. Barty failed to win the match by more than 4 games.

A whole number tennis game spread like 4 means a tie (or a push) is in play. So if Barty won exactly 4 more games than Halep, all game spread bets for each player would be refunded.

WTA Tour Events

Review Women’s Grand Slam Matchup Odds

While the WTA Tour does hold big events on its own, there are four tennis tournaments that are far and above all others. These are known as the Grand Slams. Each Grand Slam has the following events:

  • Men’s and Women’s 128-person singles
  • Men’s and Women’s 64-team doubles
  • 32-team mixed doubles
  • 8 Wheelchair singles
  • 4 Wheelchair team doubles

Each tournament is single-elimination. The match format in all grand slams is best-of-five sets for men’s singles and best-of-three sets for all other competitions.

Records for Grand Slams are typically separated between the Amateur Era and the Open Era. Professional players were allowed into the Grand Slams starting with the 1968 French Open.

Australian Margaret Court owns the all-time Grand Slams record with 24 when you combine both eras. The Open Era leader is Serena Williams with 23, followed by Steffi Graf with 22.

Australian Open

The first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open is contested over two weeks in Melbourne each January. The tournament was founded in 1905, making it the youngest of the four Grand Slams.

The tournament is played on a hard court, with the main matches taking place at Rod Laver Arena. As of 2022, the total prize money stands at $75,000,000 Australian dollars.

Margaret Court holds the record for Australian Open championships with 11. Seven of those victories came in the Amateur Era, 4 in the Open Era. Serena Williams holds the Open Era record at 7 wins.

French Open

The French Open dates back to 1891 and has been contested at Roland Garros in Paris since 1928. The tournament is played over two weeks in late May and early June.

The courts are made of clay. This surface tends to slow the pace and create a higher ball bounce. It is widely regarded as the most physically demanding tennis tournament of the year.

American Chris Evert holds the all-time French Open wins record with seven, all coming in a 13-year span from 1974-86. Steffi Graf won six crowns over a 13-year stretch from 1987-99.

Wimbledon

The Wimbledon Championships, contested at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world. It’s also considered the most prestigious. Founded in 1877, the tournament is contested over a two-week period in July.

Rain will typically wreak havoc on the Wimbledon schedule. To combat this, a retractable roof was erected on the famous Centre Court in 2010. This is where feature matches are played throughout the tournament.

Wimbledon had a purse of 40,350,000 pounds in 2022. Tennis royalty tops the list of Wimbledon women’s champions. Martina Navratilova is the record-holder with nine, followed by Steffi Graf and Serena Williams with seven each. Venus Williams has won it five times. Between 2000-10, a Williams sister won Wimbledon 9 of the 11 years in that span.

US Open

The U.S. Open is the final Grand Slam of the year played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in the New York City town of Flushing. Founded in 1881, the US Open is the richest on the tennis calendar, having a purse of $60 million in 2022.

The tournament starts in late August and wraps up over Labor Day weekend in the U.S., which is the first weekend of September. Featured matches are held at Arthur Ashe Stadium. With a capacity of 23,771, it’s the largest tennis venue in the world.

Chris Evert and Serena Williams share the Open Era record with six U.S. Open titles each. Steffi Graf won 5 U.S. open titles.

WTA Tour Futures Bets

A futures bet is a wager you can place on an event well into the future. The Grand Slam tournaments are the most popular tennis futures betting markets. You can bet on the winner of each Grand Slam tournament at any time of the year. Like other sports, odds on the winner of next year’s event will be posted upon the conclusion of this year’s event.

Placing a wager well in advance means you’re taking a risk that the player will be healthy and in good form for the tournament. The creation of the tournament’s brackets, aka the draw, also influences a player’s chances to win. The event’s futures odds will change accordingly based on these factors.

WTA Tour Futures Bet Example

2023 Wimbledon Women’s Singles
Player Odds
Iga Swiatek +450
Caroline Garcia +800
Ons Jabeur +900
Elena Rybakina +1000
Naomi Osaka +1100
Aryna Sabalenka +1400
Simona Halep +1400
Amanda Anisimova +1600
Coco Gauff +1600

These odds suggest Iga Swiatek is the favorite to win Wimbledon 2023. You’d risk $100 to win $450. As the odds get longer as you go down the list, the more money you can make if they win. Defending champion Elena Rybakina is at +1000, meaning a $100 bet would get you $1,000 if she were to repeat as the winner.

Do Your Research

Like in other sports, a wealth of information is available to you about WTA Tour players. Knowing what’s important to track can give you an advantage when deciding how to wager. Remember that while the WTA Rankings can be useful, they do represent the entire year. The rankings, like standings for other sports, don’t reflect recent player performance. They shouldn’t be the sole factor used to evaluate a player.

Key Tennis Handicapping Stats

First, review how a player performs on a specific surface. Iga Swiatek, for example, is currently the best women’s player on clay.

Second, analyze their current form. How has the player fared in recent matches? Have they struggled to win against competitive opponents?

Third, review their past history in a specific tournament. Players capable of winning a specific Grand Slam event typically have finished in the later rounds one or more times. At a minimum, they should have good momentum heading into a Grand Slam event.

Fourth, check to see how many unforced errors they have made in their past few tournaments. This is an important metric because it shows the number of mistakes a player makes on her own and without any pressure from the opponent.

Target Underdogs in Smaller Tournaments

The tennis season is long and filled with tournaments of varying prestige and monetary value. The best players in the world typically try to peak for the Grand Slams and may use smaller tournaments as tune-ups for those events. Stars may not push themselves to the limit in these smaller events. However, big underdogs trying to make a name for themselves often have greater motivation to pull off an upset. They’ll push hard for a win to jump up the rankings knowing star players in the tournament are more concerned about the Grand Slams.

WTA Tour Odds FAQs

What is the WTA?

The WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) is the top-tier women’s tennis organization in the world. It ranks the world’s best players and hosts the WTA Tour, which consists of 46 events each year that include the four Grand Slams, WTA Finals, and other events.

What are the Grand Slam events in tennis?

The Grand Slams are the four most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world: the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and U.S. Open.

How does a moneyline bet work in WTA tennis?

A moneyline bet in tennis is where you pick the winner of the match. If you bet on the favorite, you will have to bet a higher amount than you can win. A wager on the underdog will allow you to potentially win much more than you bet depending on the odds.

What is a game spread bet in WTA tennis?

A game spread bet is typically set closer to even-money odds. In this bet, if a player has a spread of -3.5, that means they must win four more combined games across all sets.

Can you bet on the winner of a WTA tennis tournament?

Yes, odds for smaller weekly tournaments typically pop up a week or two before the event. For the Grand Slams, you can place a futures bet on the winner several months in advance.
