American League Cy Young Contenders
Corbin Burnes
Corbin Burnes (+450), who won the 2021 NL Cy Young Award with the Milwaukee Brewers, is the favorite to win the 2024 AL award in April. The Baltimore Orioles acquired the 29-year-old righty in February, and the Orioles seem to be all in for a playoff push this season. Burnes should be a huge part of the stretch run for this strong Baltimore squad.
Burnes — a three-time all-star — is coming off four consecutive years in which he finished in the top eight in Cy Young voting. He is looking for a bounce-back season after sporting a 3.39 ERA in 2023, which was his highest as a starter in his MLB career. On the bright side, he has three straight 200-strikeout seasons, and he should be locked in for a fourth this year.
Tarik Skubal
There is a surprise pitcher in the running for the AL Cy Young Award in 2024, and his name is Tarik Skubal (+600), who is looking to start 30 games in an MLB season for the first time. Skubal should be able to do so if he has put his injuries behind him. Tommy John surgery sidelined him in college in 2016 and 2017. Then, he had surgery on his flexor tendon in 2023.
The 2023 season began on July 4th for Skubal, and it was an impressive season, as he made 15 starts and had a 2.80 ERA to go along with a 0.896 WHIP. Can Skubal turn his 2023 half-season statistics into a 2024 full-season? If he does, the Tigers can compete and Skubal could be the AL Cy Young award winner.

National League Cy Young Contenders
Zack Wheeler
Zack Wheeler (+500) is wheeling and dealing for the Phillies, and he is the favorite for the NL Cy Young Award in April as he attempts to win the award for the first time. Wheeler came very close in 2021 when he led all pitchers in Wins Above Replacement, innings pitched, and strikeouts per nine innings. He has had some very strong seasons in Philadelphia, and he hopes to have yet another one in 2024.
In 2019, the Phillies signed Wheeler, and the Dallas, Georgia native has pitched very well since. In 2023, Wheeler delivered to the tune of 212 strikeouts with a 3.61 ERA and 1.078 WHIP, and he then pitched very well in the postseason. This season, the Phillies are expected to once again compete in the NL East, and Wheeler will be very important as the ace of the rotation. This time around, Philadelphia hopes to make it back to the World Series.
Zac Gallen
Diamondbacks righty Zac Gallen (+700) is another favorite for the NL Cy Young Award, as he enters his fourth full-length MLB season in Arizona. Gallen, who was in a trade deadline-day deal for Jazz Chisholm Jr. in 2019, has come on strong in recent years. The starter finished fifth in the Cy Young voting in 2022, and in his 2023 all-star season, Gallen finished third in the voting. Can he jump two more spots in 2024 and win the award?
He has the skills to win the award, as he allowed the fewest hits per nine innings in 2022. Gallen then threw more innings in 2023 and saw a slight decrease in his statistics, but he did help the team win the pennant. In 2024, he appears that he will be able to better prevent the home run ball and lead the Diamondbacks to more playoff success en route to a Cy Young Award.
What are MLB Futures Bets?
A futures bet is placed on the outcome of a distant MLB event. Your bet wins if you chose the correct outcome. You may bet on more than one outcome at once, however the odds for each outcome will likely differ depending on each selection.
Popular MLB futures bets include odds to win the World Series, American and National League Pennant winners, and each division winner. Additionally, sports betting sites will have odds to win player awards like the league MVP awards. Some MLB betting sites also have player performance futures odds, like odds to lead the league in home runs, strikeouts, hits, or RBIs.
You can place a futures bet up to any point before the actual event begins or the player award is announced. Odds will vary as the season progresses. A team with a strong winning record will gradually become a favorite to win their league and possibly the World Series. On the other hand, an underperforming player will gradually become a long shot underdog to win a league’s MVP award.
MLB futures odds offer sports bettors two opportunities. One, the chance to bet on a distant event with a potentially higher payoff than any single game bet. Two, insight into which teams or players are likely to come out on top by the end of the season. Whether you actually bet the future or not, the changing odds are a useful datapoint to sharpen your baseball handicapping as the season progresses.

When to Bet MLB Futures
Like futures for other sports, there’s an art and science to betting MLB futures. The trick is to properly time your bet. You don’t want to bet too early without knowing much about how your team or player will perform. But you also don’t want to bet so late that your selection is an obvious winner with a small return.
The BBWAA polls two sportswriters from each league city across the United States. Votes are cast prior the postseason. The BBWAA announces each league’s Cy Young Award winners after the World Series. That means voters will only consider a pitcher’s regular season performance. Therefore, there’s a good chance you could reliably predict who’s in the running for each league’s Cy Young Award by the end of the summer.

Cy Young Award Betting Strategies
First, identify three to five pitchers most likely to win each league’s Cy Young Award. The pitchers should be top starters and in good health prior to – and during – the MLB regular season. Take note of each pitcher’s bullpen, and their team’s ability to rest them with good relief pitchers and capable closers.
Second, eliminate the least likely pitchers from consideration. Longshots rarely win MLB player awards unless multiple favorites have fallen out of contention. Since this isn’t likely to happen, focus on the performance of leading contenders throughout the season, particularly from mid-August onwards. Sportswriters voting for the awards will be most likely to base their decision on recent performances versus what happened in the early games of the regular season.
Moreover, team managers will be likely to rest star pitchers early on in the season, saving them for potential postseason play. In many respects, the opening odds for each league’s Cy Young Award are a bit of a shot in the dark.
Third, keep tabs on weekly injury reports, carefully monitoring the health of pitchers in the running to win the Cy Young Award. Don’t forget to review the rest of their bullpen, too. The ability of a pitcher to maintain their performance throughout the regular season comes down to getting adequate rest between games. This requires their team to have a good overall pitching staff.
Finally, review historic voting trends and biases. Also note that pitchers can win the award multiple times. There’s no prohibition against the same pitcher winning back-to-back years. As of 2024, Roger Clemens has won a record 7 Cy Young Awards (1986, 1987, 1991, 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2004). Randy Johnson follows Clemens with 5 Cy Young Awards (1995, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002).
Don’t forget to review articles and interviews from sportswriters and media figures who previously voted for each league’s Cy Young Award. Try to get a sense of the criteria they used to cast their vote.
Knowing how the sportswriters analyzed each player and which characteristics garnered the most attention can help you refine your own selections.
