American League Rookie of the Year Contenders
Wyatt Langford
The favorite for the AL Rookie of the Year Award is Wyatt Langford (+240), the fourth overall pick by the Texas Rangers in the 2023 MLB Draft. Langford made his MLB debut in 2024. The defending champion Rangers have even more firepower in their lineup this season. The right-handed outfielder played some impressive baseball for the Florida Gators and is looking to showcase his talents in the big leagues.
He never had an MLB plate appearance until 2024, but he did play 44 games in the minor leagues for the Rangers organization in 2023. Overall, Langford had an impressive 1.157 OPS over 44 minor league games last season, and he is the No. 6 prospect in all of baseball.
Jackson Holliday
Just behind Langford for AL Rookie of the Year is Jackson Holliday (+300) of the Baltimore Orioles. The 20-year-old second baseman bats left and throws right, and he will look to make an impressive impact for the young and hungry Orioles squad. Holliday hopes to provide a big bat and strong enough fielding to be a balanced addition to the lineup.
Holliday, the son of retired outfielder Matt Holliday, is a highly touted prospect and MLB’s No. 1 prospect in 2024. The Oklahoma State product sported a .941 OPS in the minors in 2023, but he did strike out 118 times in 125 games. Holliday looks to prove the scouts right and impress in the majors this season. He and teammate Heston Kjerstad were the two Orioles in the 2023 MLB Futures Game and are both expected to be great for the 2024 Orioles.

National League Rookie of the Year Contenders
Yoshinobu Yamamoto
Yoshinobu Yamamoto (+250) is a very different type of player in comparison to the other Rookie of the Year candidates. Yamamoto, who was born in Japan, already has 70 wins under his belt in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) and has the best odds at the NL award.
Yamamoto had many accomplishments in NPB — his best one was achieving the pitching triple crown (leading the league in wins, strikeouts, and earned run average) in three straight seasons. No one is expecting him to do so in an MLB season anytime soon, but he should have a stellar season for a Dodgers team that is primed for playoff success.
Jackson Chourio
Jackson Chourio (+400), the Milwaukee Brewers outfielder, stands at second in the NL Rookie of the Year odds. Baseball America ranked him as the No. 3 prospect prior to the 2023 season. For 2024, he is the best prospect in the NL and ranked as MLB’s No. 2 overall in all of baseball. The Venezuelan-born outfielder should have a fantastic 2024 for a Brewers team that is looking to build on a strong 2023.
Chourio seems like he will be the primary rightfielder for Milwaukee in 2024, bringing power to the Brewers lineup. In both 2022 and 2023, he participated in the MLB Futures Game. Last season, he hit 51 extra-base hits, including 22 home runs, in 128 minor league games. Last year, he showed that he was ready for the majors. And this year, he looks to boost the Brewers to the top of a competitive NL Central.
What are MLB Futures Bets?
A futures bet is placed on the outcome of a distant MLB event. Your bet wins if you chose the correct outcome. You may bet on more than one outcome at once, however the odds for each outcome will likely differ depending on each selection.
Popular MLB futures bets include odds to win the World Series, American and National League Pennant winners, and each division winner. Additionally, sports betting sites will have odds to win player awards like the league MVP awards. Some MLB betting sites also have player performance futures odds, like odds to lead the league in home runs, strikeouts, hits, or RBIs.
You can place a futures bet up to any point before the actual event begins or the player award is announced. Odds will vary as the season progresses. A team with a strong winning record will gradually become a favorite to win their league and possibly the World Series. On the other hand, an underperforming player will gradually become a long shot underdog to win a league’s MVP award.
MLB futures odds offer sports bettors two opportunities. One, the chance to bet on a distant event with a potentially higher payoff than any single game bet. Two, insight into which teams or players are likely to come out on top by the end of the season. Whether you actually bet the future or not, the changing odds are a useful datapoint to sharpen your baseball handicapping as the season progresses.

When to Bet MLB Futures
Like futures for other sports, there’s an art and science to betting MLB futures. The trick is to properly time your bet. You don’t want to bet too early without knowing much about how your team or player will perform. But you also don’t want to bet so late that your selection is an obvious winner with a small return.
The BBWAA polls two sports writers from each league city across the United States. Votes are cast prior the postseason. The BBWAA announces each league’s Rookie of the Year Award winners after the World Series. That means voters will only consider a player’s regular season performance. Rookie of the Year Award Betting Strategies
First, identify three to five players most likely to win each league’s Rookie of the Year Award. The players should have been top prospects or highly sought after recruits, and in good health prior to – and during – the MLB regular season.
Second, eliminate the least likely players from consideration. Longshots rarely win MLB player awards unless multiple favorites have fallen out of contention. Since this isn’t likely to happen, focus on the performance of leading contenders throughout the season, particularly from mid-August onwards. Sportswriters voting for the awards will be most likely to base their decision on recent performances versus what happened in the early games of the regular season. Watch the Rookie of the Year odds carefully starting in late June.
It’s worth noting that no particular position has been historically more likely to win the ROTY Award. In recent years, a mix of infielders, outfielders, and a few pitchers have won. This trend differs from each league’s MVP Award, which tends to favor infield players. Finally, there isn’t a strong bias towards rookie pitchers either.
Third, keep tabs on weekly injury reports, carefully monitoring the health of players in the running to win the Rookie of the Year Award. Don’t forget to review the rest of their team, too. Rookies need the support of a good team to help keep them healthy throughout the season. This includes rookie pitchers, who’ll need an adequate bullpen to keep them rested between starts.
Mind the Trends
Interestingly, Los Angeles/Brooklyn Dodgers rookies have won the award a record 18 times as of 2024. The New York Yankees and the Atlanta/Boston Braves come in second with 9 rookie award winners each.
Don’t forget to review articles and interviews from sportswriters and media figures who previously voted for each league’s Rookie of the Year Award. Try to get a sense of the criteria they used to cast their vote.
Knowing how the sportswriters analyzed each player and which characteristics garnered the most attention can help you refine your own selections.
