Regular Season MVP Contenders
Way before the start of the NFL regular season, everyone makes their predictions about the MVP. We all feel like we know which players will play best, but there are always surprises. Prior to the season, Matthew Stafford and Trey Lance are both +5000 to win the MVP. Another dark horse is Justin Field (+2000), but who are the top players vying for the regular season MVP award? Patrick Mahomes (+650), Joe Burrow (+700), and Josh Allen (+750) have the best chance, and they all have terrific offenses around them in the AFC. However, remember that the first NFC quarterback on the list is Jalen Hurts (+1100), and you can get good odds on him and Dak Prescott (+1600).

Mahomes is the defending regular season MVP and Super Bowl MVP, and the Kansas City Chiefs are the defending Super Bowl champions. The Chiefs were underrated last year, but they are not this season, so Mahomes will have to step up his performance to an even higher level to be able to compete in what will be a very competitive AFC in 2023. It will not be easy for him even with up-and-comer Justin Herbert (+900) in his division. Look for Mahomes — if healthy — to be a competitor in the MVP race, but there might not be a lot of value with him as the MVP.

Player Award Betting Strategies
Betting NFL player award futures comes with more risk than betting team futures. While teams can compensate for underperforming or injured players with their second and third-string, individual players must remain healthy to be competitive for an award. Unlike teams, individual players have no backup plan. Once injured or sidelined, they will be quickly removed from consideration for a regular season player award.
First, identify three or four players most likely to win a particular award. The players should be high performers, in good health before the season begins, and at reduced risk to get injured during the regular season. Consider the amount of support a player has from their team, including whether or not teammates can help minimize their risk of injury.
Second, eliminate the least likely players from consideration. Longshots rarely win NFL player awards unless multiple favorites have a terrible regular season. Then, focus on the performance of each player throughout the season, particularly from Week 12 onwards. Sportswriters voting for the awards will be most likely to base their decision on recent performances versus what happened in the early weeks of the regular season.
Third, keep tabs on weekly injury reports, carefully monitoring the overall health of each player’s team. The ability of a player to maintain their performance throughout the regular season inevitably relies on the health of their teammates.
Finally, review historic player award voting trends and biases. For example, voters heavily favor offensive players for the MVP award. Backing a defensive player should be done with caution. Also review articles and interviews from sportswriters and media figures who previously voted for player awards. Try to get a sense of the criteria they used to cast their vote.
Knowing how the sportswriters analyzed each player and which characteristics garnered the most attention can help you refine your own selections.
