Top Eastern Conference Team
Although the Washington Capitals finished the 2024-25 regular season with an Eastern Conference-leading 111 points, the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers are looking for a bounce-back regular season. They only produced 98 points last season, but Florida is tied with the Carolina Hurricanes with a projected 106.5 points for the upcoming 2025-26 season. The Tampa Bay Lightning (102.5 points), New Jersey Devils (99.5), and Toronto Maple Leafs (99.5) are next up in terms of projected number of points. The Hurricanes have never won a Presidents’ Trophy, but the Florida Panthers did win one in 2021-22. However, in that postseason, the Eastern Conference champion Lightning swept the Panthers in the second round of the playoffs.

What is a NHL Point Total Bet?
The season point total bet is part prop, part future hybrid. The plus and minus values assign odds to either side of the team’s point total line. This bet functions like a total bet. Choose either over or under the sportsbook’s line.
Example Buffalo Sabres Season Point Total
- 92.5 o -115
- 92.5 u -115
This point total line includes ½ points. That means no tie bets are possible.
Options:
Risk $115 to win $100 that Buffalo earns more than 92.5 points. A result of 93 or more points wins.
Risk $115 to win $110 that Buffalo earns less than 92.5 points. A result of 92 or fewer points wins.
How to Handicap a NHL Point Total Bet
Handicap a team’s NHL point total using its upcoming schedule, likely starting lineups, and any recently drafted players. Remember, you can bet under the sportsbook’s line if the point total is too high. If you believe a team is likely to score fewer points, bet under a point total line that looks too high.
Avoid betting on your favorite NHL teams or others that you otherwise root for. “Fan bias” is real. It can cloud the judgment of even the most seasoned sports handicappers. Better to research and bet on a team you don’t know much about.
Always consider both sides of a point total line. The line is set by the sportsbook. It may move as betting action piles up on one side more than the other. The team doesn’t have to “score” the exact point total line. Instead, you’re deciding whether their actual number of points will be more or fewer than the sportsbook’s line.
Finally, be careful when betting whole number lines like 87, 92, or 98. A tie is possible when the sportsbook doesn’t set a .5 half-point line. The good news: you get your bet back if the bet pushes. The bad news: you tie up money in the bet waiting for a result.
