Big 12 Win Totals

Baylor and Oklahoma State were the stalwarts of the 2021 Big 12 football season. Can they lead the conference yet again in 2022? Las Vegas says no, as Oklahoma is the projected conference winner, as the school was heading into last year. The Sooners had the preseason AP ranking of No. 2. They finished at No. 10 because they lost to both Baylor and Oklahoma State. Oklahoma bounced back with a 47-32 victory against Oregon in the Alamo Bowl, so can the Sooners build off that success and win the Big 12 in 2022? Let us go through their win total as well as the rest of the top Big 12 teams.

Oklahoma

With a win total of 9.5 games, the Big 12 favorites have a new coach in Brent Venables and are looking to win double-digit games after having at least 10 wins in 18 of the last 22 years. The Lincoln Riley era in Oklahoma is over, and the Sooners are looking to turn the page. Will new-look Oklahoma prove the doubters wrong and win the late-season road games that are needed to win double-digit games? Redshirt junior quarterback Dillon Gabriel seems to be up to the task. You can take the over.

Texas

The Longhorns are projected to finish second in the Big 12 with nine wins, and a new man will be under center for Texas. Quinn Ewers, who went to high school in Southlake, Texas, will be the quarterback for the Longhorns after transferring from Ohio State. While Ewers is seventh in the Heisman Trophy odds, running back Bijan Robinson is tied for fourth. Head coach Steve Sarkisian is looking to bounce back after a disappointing 5-7 season last year, and the squad should. However, nine wins seem to be too much. Take the under.

Oklahoma State

Also at a nine-game win total is the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Last season’s Fiesta Bowl winner hopes to contend for the Big 12 Championship again. The Cowboys fell mere inches away from winning the conference championship game against the Baylor Bears. Spencer Sanders is back again as the team’s quarterback and although he lost his offensive coordinator Jim Knowles to Ohio State, the Cowboys are back for more. Can they make it another strong double-digit win season? The answer is yes, so take the over.

Baylor

Baylor ended Oklahoma’s long reign as Big 12 champion last year with a 21-16 victory over Oklahoma State. Yet, Baylor’s over/under win total is set at just eight games this season. In 2021, the Bears won a conference-best eight games in the Big 12 and 12 games overall. The 12 wins were the best in school history, and the Bears will look to build on that in 2022. There are high expectations among the fans in Waco for Dave Aranda, but Vegas has them at just eight wins. That is doable with only a couple of difficult road games this season. Take the over.

TCU

We are onto the dark horses of the Big 12, as TCU is as low as +1800 to win the conference. The Texas Christian University Horned Frogs struggled mightily last year to the tune of a 5-7 record. Vegas has their win total at 6.5 games this year, so there is improvement expected. Gary Patterson, who coached the team from 2001 to 2021, is no longer the head coach at TCU. Sonny Dykes at a winning percentage of at least .667 the last three years at SMU, so maybe Dykes can keep up with the success at TCU. Take the over at 6.5 wins, but TCU is still a longshot to the win the conference.

Iowa State

There is value with Iowa State as well. The Cyclones are as low as +2000 to win the Big 12, with an over/under win total of 6.5 victories, too. The Cyclones were the preseason No. 7 team in the AP poll in 2021, but they underachieved, finishing with a 7-6 (5-4) record. They also lost the Cheez-It Bowl, 20-13, against Clemson. Matt Campbell needs a bounce-back season. The 2022 season could be mediocre yet again, so there is not that much confidence in winning over 6.5 games. Take the under.

What is a College Football Win Total Bet?

The season win total is part prop, part future hybrid. The plus and minus values assign odds to either side of the team’s win total line. This bet functions like a total bet. Choose either over or under the sportsbook’s line.

Example Oklahoma Season Wins

  • 9.5 o -162
  • 9.5 u +125

This win total line includes ½ games. That means no tie bets are possible.

Options:
Risk $162 to win $100 that Oklahoma wins more than 9.5 games. A result of 10 or more wins.
Risk $100 to win $125 that Oklahoma wins less than 9.5 games. A result of 9 or fewer wins.

How to Handicap a College Football Win Total Bet

Handicap a college football team’s win total using its upcoming schedule, likely starters, and any recently transferred players. Remember, you can bet under the sportsbook’s line if the win total is too high. If you believe a team is likely to win fewer games, bet under a win total line that looks too high.

Avoid betting on your favorite college football teams or others that you otherwise root for. “Fan bias” is real. It can cloud the judgment of even the most seasoned sports handicappers. Better to research and bet on a team you don’t know much about.

Always consider both sides of a win total line. The line is set by the sportsbook. It may move as betting action piles up on one side more than the other. The team doesn’t have to “win” the exact win total line. Instead, you’re deciding whether their actual number of wins will be more or less than the sportsbook’s line.

Finally, be careful when betting whole number lines like 7, 8, or 9. A tie is possible when the sportsbook doesn’t set a .5 half-win line. The good news: you get your bet back if the bet pushes. The bad news: you tie up money in the bet waiting for a result.
