The ACC conference has a lot of middling teams, but it is Clemson once again at the top. The Tigers did not play well last season, so they will look to finish with a ranking much higher than finishing in the teens last year. Meanwhile, there are a lot of other competitors like Wake Forest vying for the ACC this year. It should be an interesting season, and many of the better ACC teams could be looking at overs this season.

Clemson
Each of the last two seasons for Clemson ended with double-digit wins, extending their streak of 10-plus win seasons to 11. The Tigers have a tremendous defense, and they showed their defensive prowess for a lot of the 2021 season. Unfortunately, the Clemson offense was not enough, as the team combined for just 41 points in its three losses: 10-3 vs. Georgia, 27-21 at NC State, and 27-17 at Pittsburgh. The Tigers scored at least 30 points in six of the school’s 10 wins last season. It will be an easier schedule for Clemson this season with Notre Dame as Clemson’s lone difficult non-conference opponent. Take the over at 10.5.
Miami
Last year, the U finished second in the Coastal Division of the ACC but won just seven games, five of which were in the conference (7-5, 5-3). The win total for the Hurricanes this time around is 8.5, which means that new head coach Mario Cristobal is expecting to improve the squad. It will be Cristobal’s third stint with Miami after he leaves Oregon, where he led the Ducks to two Pac-12 championships in his four years there as the head coach. Road games at Clemson and Texas A&M will be difficult, but an over of 8.5 wins should be doable.
NC State
The Wolfpack is also a team with an over/under win total of 8.5 games. After a 9-3 season last year — finishing with a No. 20 ranking — NC State is a good bet for the over in 2022 and is led by one of the best quarterbacks in the nation in Devin Leary. The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award finalist broke the school record with 35 passing touchdowns last season. After beginning the season at East Carolina, the Wolfpack get the first of two three-game homestands during the 2022 season. The over should be a good bet as long as NC State does not trip up on the road against Louisville and North Carolina at the end of the season.
Pittsburgh
With a win total of 8.5 games, the Pitt Panthers are looking for another strong season. They finished No. 13 in the AP poll last year and won the Coastal Division. We could see another over here, as Pitt does not have a difficult non-conference schedule. The only relatively tough opponent outside of the ACC is the Tennessee Volunteers, and they have a lower win total heading into 2022 than Pitt. Pat Narduzzi brings his 53-37 career record at Pitt into 2022, but he will look to improve his 1-4 record in bowls with the Panthers. His ability to accumulate wins should make you confident in the over.
Wake Forest
We have yet another 8.5 win total here and another team that was ranked by the end of 2021 (No. 15). The winners of the Atlantic Division were arguably the best team in the ACC last year, but they finished below Pitt and Clemson in the rankings. The Demon Deacons have a very easy start to the season, so the question will be if they can have a strong 2022 as they did in 2021. The offense potentially can lead this team to many wins again. The over and under are given equal odds, so if you want to jump on the over here, it could be a wise decision.
North Carolina
Mack Brown and the Tar Heels struggled to the tune of a 6-7 (3-5) record last season, so in order to hit the over of 7.5 wins this season, they will need a better performance this year. Appalachian State does not make it easy on North Carolina. The Tar Heels will be at App State for their second game of the season. The schedule does not seem to get better this year, with Miami and Wake Forest on the road. The under seems to be the way to go here for the Tar Heels.
What is a College Football Win Total Bet?
The season win total is part prop, part future hybrid. The plus and minus values assign odds to either side of the team’s win total line. This bet functions like a total bet. Choose either over or under the sportsbook’s line.
Example Florida State Season Wins
- 6.5 o -143
- 6.5 u +115
This win total line includes ½ games. That means no tie bets are possible.
Options:
Risk $143 to win $100 that Florida State wins more than 6.5 games. A result of 7 or more wins.
Risk $100 to win $115 that Florida State wins less than 6.5 games. A result of 6 or less wins.
How to Handicap a College Football Win Total Bet
Handicap a college football team’s win total using its upcoming schedule, likely starters, and any recently transferred players. Remember, you can bet under the sportsbook’s line if the win total is too high. If you believe a team is likely to win fewer games, bet under a win total line that looks too high.
Avoid betting on your favorite college football teams or others that you otherwise root for. “Fan bias” is real. It can cloud the judgment of even the most seasoned sports handicappers. Better to research and bet on a team you don’t know much about.
Always consider both sides of a win total line. The line is set by the sportsbook. It may move as betting action piles up on one side more than the other. The team doesn’t have to “win” the exact win total line. Instead, you’re deciding whether their actual number of wins will be more or less than the sportsbook’s line.
Finally, be careful when betting whole number lines like 7, 8, or 9. A tie is possible when the sportsbook doesn’t set a .5 half-win line. The good news: you get your bet back if the bet pushes. The bad news: you tie up money in the bet waiting for a result.
