Top Western Conference Team
The Edmonton Oilers represented the Western Conference in the 2024 Stanley Cup Final and are projected to lead the NHL in points by a large margin. The Oilers had a strong playoff run in 2023-24 after a 104-point regular season. The Western Conference was very top-heavy, as five teams had more than 100 points and three more teams had either 98 or 99 points. However, just three Western Conference teams have triple-digit point totals: the Oilers (108.5), Dallas Stars (103.5), and Colorado Avalanche (102.5).

What is a NHL Point Total Bet?
The season point total bet is part prop, part future hybrid. The plus and minus values assign odds to either side of the team’s point total line. This bet functions like a total bet. Choose either over or under the sportsbook’s line.
Example Colorado Avalanche Season Point Total
- 106.5 o -115
- 106.5 u -115
This point total line includes ½ points. That means no tie bets are possible.
Options:
Risk $115 to win $100 that Colorado earns more than 106.5 points. A result of 107 or more points wins.
Risk $115 to win $110 that Buffalo earns less than 106.5 points. A result of 106 or fewer points wins.
How to Handicap a NHL Point Total Bet
Handicap a team’s NHL point total using its upcoming schedule, likely starting lineups, and any recently drafted players. Remember, you can bet under the sportsbook’s line if the point total is too high. If you believe a team is likely to score fewer points, bet under a point total line that looks too high.
Avoid betting on your favorite NHL teams or others that you otherwise root for. “Fan bias” is real. It can cloud the judgment of even the most seasoned sports handicappers. Better to research and bet on a team you don’t know much about.
Always consider both sides of a point total line. The line is set by the sportsbook. It may move as betting action piles up on one side more than the other. The team doesn’t have to “score” the exact point total line. Instead, you’re deciding whether their actual number of points will be more or fewer than the sportsbook’s line.
Finally, be careful when betting whole number lines like 87, 92, or 98. A tie is possible when the sportsbook doesn’t set a .5 half-point line. The good news: you get your bet back if the bet pushes. The bad news: you tie up money in the bet waiting for a result.
