American League MVP Contenders

Juan Soto

The favorites for AL MVP both happen to be on the same team and of course, that team is the Bronx Bombers themselves, the New York Yankees. The Yankees new star outfielder Juan Soto (+375) played five years in Washington and two years in San Diego before being the major part of a blockbuster trade to New York. The 25-year-old outfielder has yet to win an MVP award, but maybe a move to the American League will change his fortunes. He came very close in 2021 as he finished second in the voting behind Bryce Harper, who saw success after changing teams.

Soto has played in the postseason just twice, but he hopes to lead the 2024 Yankees to a strong season en route to a championship. In 2023, Soto played all 162 games for the Padres and sported slash lines of .275/.410/.519/.930. The expectation is that he improves on those numbers and even has new career highs in homers (35) and doubles (32) after setting career highs last season.

Aaron Judge

Soto’s new outfield buddy Aaron Judge is just behind him in terms of AL MVP odds (+650). Judge’s 2023 was a disappointment mostly because of injuries and his mammoth 2022 MVP numbers. Even with playing only 106 games last season, Judge still finished 15th in the AL MVP voting. He posted an amazing OPS 1.019 to go along with .267/.406/.613. Judge’s 2023 season marked his third straight year with a Silver Slugger.

Judge may not approach 62 home runs in 2024 as he did in 2022, but the 6-foot-7 power hitter continues to put a lot of pressure on opposing pitchers. He may be in his early 30s, but he will compete for MVP trophies for several years if he stays healthy. Look for Judge to mash again in 2024.

National League MVP Contenders

Mookie Betts

Mookie Betts (+400) has ranked in the top eight of MVP voting every year since 2016, except for the shortened 2020 season. He seemingly cannot be stopped, and that is with Shohei Ohtani being added to the robust Dodgers lineup.

In Betts’ 2018 MVP season, he led the American League in batting average and slugging, and that year was the only one in which he led the league in any slash line. As he plays in his fifth season with the Dodgers, he is cementing himself as one of the greats in the franchise’s history. He has already delivered Los Angeles a championship, and he is looking for more hardware in 2024.

Ronald Acuña Jr.

Another recent champion — Ronald Acuña Jr. (+500) — is close behind Betts in terms of odds for the NL MVP. The 26-year-old outfielder and reigning MVP is already a four-time all-star and three-time Silver Slugger.

In 2023, Acuña could not be stopped, as he led the majors in hits, runs, stolen bases, on-base percentage, and total bases. He led the Braves to an MLB-best 104 wins as well.

It will not be easy for the Braves superstar to repeat as MVP, as it has not happened in over a decade. The last player to win back-to-back MLB MVPs was Miguel Cabrera in 2012 and 2013.

What are MLB Futures Bets?

A futures bet is placed on the outcome of a distant MLB event. Your bet wins if you chose the correct outcome. You may bet on more than one outcome at once, however the odds for each outcome will likely differ depending on each selection.

Popular MLB futures bets include odds to win the World Series, American and National League Pennant winners, and each division winner. Additionally, sports betting sites will have odds to win player awards like the league MVP awards. Some MLB betting sites also have player performance futures odds, like odds to lead the league in home runs, strikeouts, hits, or RBIs.

You can place a futures bet up to any point before the actual event begins or the player award is announced. Odds will vary as the season progresses. A team with a strong winning record will gradually become a favorite to win their league and possibly the World Series. On the other hand, an underperforming player will gradually become a long shot underdog to win a league’s MVP award.

MLB futures odds offer sports bettors two opportunities. One, the chance to bet on a distant event with a potentially higher payoff than any single game bet. Two, insight into which teams or players are likely to come out on top by the end of the season. Whether you actually bet the future or not, the changing odds are a useful datapoint to sharpen your baseball handicapping as the season progresses.

MLB Futures Bets

The following are the most popular MLB futures bets. These bets are the most commonly placed by recreational and professional bettors alike. Use the odds to guide your handicapping throughout the season.

When to Bet MLB Futures

Like futures for other sports, there’s an art and science to betting MLB futures. The trick is to properly time your bet. You don’t want to bet too early without knowing much about how your team or player will perform. But you also don’t want to bet so late that your selection is an obvious winner with a small return.

The BBWAA polls two sports writers from each league city across the United States. Votes are cast prior the postseason. The BBWAA publishes the League MVP winner results after the World Series. That means voters will only consider a player’s regular season performance. Therefore, there’s a good chance you could reliably predict who’s in the running for each league MVP award by the end of the summer.

League MVP Award Betting Strategies

First, identify three or four players most likely to win the league MVP award. The players should be high performers, in good health prior to – and throughout – the MLB regular season, and not particularly injury prone.

Second, eliminate the least likely players from consideration. Longshots rarely win MLB player awards unless multiple favorites have fallen out of contention. Since this isn’t likely to happen, focus on the performance of leading contenders throughout the season, particularly from mid-August onwards. Sportswriters voting for the awards will be most likely to base their decision on recent performances versus what happened in the early games of the regular season.

Third, keep tabs on weekly injury reports, carefully monitoring the health of players in the running to win the MVP award. Don’t forget to review the rest of their team, too. The ability of a player to maintain their performance throughout the regular season inevitably relies on the health of their teammates.

Finally, review historic player award voting trends and biases. For example, voters heavily favor infield players for the league MVP awards. To date, first basemen, pitchers, and second basemen, respectively, have won the most MVP awards, followed by third basemen and shortstops. The majority of pitchers who have won the award have been righthanded. Backing a player from a historically disadvantaged position, like shortstop, should be done with caution.

Don’t forget to review articles and interviews from sportswriters and media figures who previously voted for the league MVP awards. Try to get a sense of the criteria they used to cast their vote.

Knowing how the sportswriters analyzed each player and which characteristics garnered the most attention can help you refine your own selections.
