There are multiple ways to bet on tennis. Our tutorial covers the most common plus a few interesting variants.

The first section outlines the most popular tennis bets. These are easy to learn if you already possess a working knowledge of sports betting.

The second section describes exotic tennis bets. We’ll cover set lines, player game totals, set betting and 1st set winner bets in detail. How to Bet on Tennis - Tennis Betting Sites

Easy Tennis Bets

1. Tennis Moneyline Betting

Bet is made on outright winner.

  • A positive number indicates the underdog.
  • A negative number indicates the favorite.
  • Two -110 numbers indicate no specific favorite.

Negative numbers indicate how much you risk to win $100.
Positive numbers indicate how much you win for risking $100.

Sportsbooks will display moneyline odds next to each each player’s name. The juice is included in each line.

Tennis Moneyline Example

A. Zverev -580
D. Ferrer +390

  1. Zverev is the favorite. Ferrer is the underdog.
  2. Zverev bettors lay $580 to win $100. Ferrer bettors win $390 for risking $100.

More Info

Learn more about moneylines with our informative video. It explains how moneylines work. Use the reference section to convert moneyline odds into their fractional or decimal equivalents. This is calculation is useful for comparing USA sportsbooks to their European counterparts.

2. Tennis Match Total Betting

Sportsbooks estimate the match’s total number of games. Decide whether final result will be over or under this number.

Combine the number of games played in each set. Over bettors win if the result is greater than the sportbook’s estimate. Under bettors win if the result is less.

Total Juice

Negative numbers indicate how much you risk to win $100. Most tennis totals charge juice on both sides of the line. Values commonly range from -105 to -115.

Positive numbers indicate how much you win for risking $100. These are less common. +102 means win $102 for risking $100.

Tennis Total Bet Example

S. Williams o20.5 -110
M. Sakkari u20.5 -120

  1. The total line is 20.5. Over bettors have -110 juice. Under bettors have -120 juice.
  2. Over bettors believe more than 20.5 games will be played. They risk $110 to win $100.
  3. Under bettors believe less than 20.5 games will be played. They risk $120 to win $100.

Result: Williams defeats Sakkari 6-3, 7-5. Sum the number of games played: 6+3+7+5 = 21. 21 is greater than 20.5 Over bettors win. Under bettors lose.

Tennis Whole Number Total

½ games don’t exist in tennis. Sportsbooks use ½ game increments to prevent tie bets. Therefore, the final result can only be over or under the sportsbook’s line.

Matches with whole number totals can tie the sportsbook’s line. Suppose the line from our example was 20. Williams defeats Sakkari 7-5, 6-2.

7+5+6+2 = 20. 20 ties the sportsbook’s line. All bets would be refunded.

More Info

Sportsbetting3.com’s handy total betting video explains the mechanics of this popular bet. Remember, football and basketball totals refer to points scored. Tennis totals always refer to games played.

3. Tennis Spread Betting

Bet is made on each player’s expected winning margin in games.

Tally the number of games each player won. Determine whether the difference is greater than, less than or equal to the sportsbook’s line.

Taking the Underdog
Add the spread to the underdog’s games won. Your bet wins if the sum is greater than the favorite’s games won.

Taking the Favorite
Subtract the spread from the favorite’s games won. Your bet wins if the difference is greater than the underdog’s games won.

½ Game Tennis Spreads

Sportsbooks use ½ game lines to prevent tie bets. A ½ game in tennis isn’t possible.

  • Round the favorite’s 0.5 line up to the nearest whole number. The favorite’s game count minus this number must be equal to or greater than the underdog’s count.
  • Round the underdog’s 0.5 line down to the nearest whole number. The underdog’s game count plus this number must be equal to or greater than the favorite’s count.

Tie bets are possible when the spread is a whole number like 3, 4 or 5. Your bet will be returned if the result ties the spread.

Tennis Spread Juice

Negative numbers indicate how much you risk to win $100.
Positive numbers indicate how much you win for risking $100.

Tennis Spread Bet Example

M. Kecmanovic +3.5 +100
M. Raonic -3.5 -120

  1. Raonic is the -3.5 game favorite. Kecmanovic is the +3.5 game underdog.
  2. Raonic bettors believe the difference between him and Kecmanovic will be 4 games or more. They risk $120 to win $100.
  3. Kecmanovic bettors believe the difference between him and Raonic will be 3 games or less. They risk $100 to win $120.

Favorite Result: Raonic defeats Kecmanovic 6-2, 6-2. Sum the number of games each player won: Raonic 6+6 = 12, Kecmanovic 2+2 = 4.

12-4 = 8. Raonic won 8 more games than Kecmanovic. 8 is equal to or greater than 4. Favorite bettors win.

Underdog Result: Raonic defeats Kecmanovic 7-6, 5-7, 7-6. Sum the number of games each player won: Raonic 7+5+7 = 19, Kecmanovic 6+7+6 = 19.

19-19 = 0. Raonic won 0 more games then Kecmanovic. 0 is equal to or less than 3. Underdog bettors win.

Tie Result: Suppose the spread was 4.

Raonic defeats Kecmanovic 6-4, 6-4. Sum the number of games each player won: Raonic 6+6 = 12, Kecmanovic 4+4 = 8.

12-8 = 4. Raonic won 4 more games then Kecmanovic. 4 ties the 4 game spread. Sportsbook would refund all bets.

Exotic Tennis Bets

1. Tennis Set Line

Bet is made on each player’s expected winning margin in sets. Decide whether the favorite will win in straight sets if the spread equals the number of sets needed to win.

Otherwise the favorite must win by the set line value. This may happen in 5 set championship matches.

Taking the Underdog
Add the spread to the underdog’s sets won. Your bet wins if the sum is greater than the favorite’s sets won.

Taking the Favorite
Subtract the spread from the favorite’s sets won. Your bet wins if the difference is greater than the favorite’s sets won.

½ Set Tennis Spreads

Sportsbooks use ½ set lines to prevent tie bets. A ½ set in tennis isn’t possible.

  • Round the favorite’s 0.5 line up to the nearest whole number. The favorite’s count minus this number must be equal to or greater than the underdog’s count.
  • Round the underdog’s 0.5 line down to the nearest whole number. The underdog’s count plus this number must be equal to or greater than the favorite’s count.

3 Set Matches, -1.5 Set Line

Player wins the match after winning 2 of 3 sets. A -1.5 set line means the favorite must win in straight sets, 2-0.

5 Set Matches, -2.5 Set Line

Player wins the match after winning 3 of 5 sets. A -2.5 set line means the favorite must win in straight sets, 3-0.

5 Set Matches, -1.5 Set Line

A -1.5 set line means the favorite must win 2 more sets than the underdog. The favorite could win 3-1 or 3-0.

Tennis Set Line Betting Directions

  1. Visit the tennis odds page. Click the “more” or “+” or “other” button near your match’s odds.
  2. Look for “set handicap” or “set line”.
  3. Choose the favorite or the underdog.

Sportsbooks may offer 2 set handicap bets with the same line. One bet will have odds for the match favorite. The other will have odds for the match underdog.

Bets on the match underdog winning by the set line will pay substantially more than the same bet on the favorite.

Tennis Parlay Directions

  1. Select 2-15 moneylines, totals, spreads or combinations of all three.
  2. Matchups from other sports like basketball, football or boxing can be included.
  3. All selections must be correct to win.
  4. Each tie reduces parlay size by 1 selection. Review your sportsbook’s parlay rules carefully.
