2025-26 NHL Team Shootout Records

The following are current NHL team shootout records. Recall that goals scored during a shootout determine whether NHL moneyline, total, and puck line bets win or lose. Therefore, it’s important to factor a team’s shootout record into your NHL handicapping, especially if you anticipate a regular season game going past the five minute overtime period.

NHL Shootouts

NHL regular season games go to overtime when the score is tied after 3 periods of regulation play. The overtime period lasts 5 minutes and is played in a 3 on 3 format. The first team to score during overtime wins the game.

If neither team scores during overtime, regular season NHL games go to a shootout.

Note that there are no shootouts for Stanley Cup playoff games. Instead, 5 minute overtimes continue indefinitely until a team scores the winning goal.

Shootouts Determine Wagering Results

NHL shootouts will determine the result of your game puck line, moneyline, or goal total wager. A tie after regulation play and overtime will not result in a push for any game bet because a shootout will ultimately decide the winner and total goals scored.

There are a couple exceptions to keep in mind. One is a 3-way moneyline bet. This is a wager on either team to win or for the game to be tied after 3 periods of regulation play. Whether or not the game goes to overtime or a shootout doesn’t matter.

Another would be a bet on a specific game segment, like the 1st period, 2nd period, or 3rd period result. Again, the overtime period and a potential shootout wouldn’t matter.

The final exception would be some NHL prop bets. Read any details below a NHL prop bet carefully, particularly if it is for the entire game or limited to a particular period. For example, while a player goal total line typically includes any goals scored in overtime or a shootout, some other game props may not.
