The ballot is announced before the NCAA National Basketball Tournament begins. Some 1000 sportswriters – representing all 50 states – cast their votes and the results are tallied. The top-10 earn All-American status, and the player with the most votes wins the John R. Wooden award.

While teams can compensate for underperforming or injured players with their second and third-string, individual players must remain healthy to be competitive for an award.
