NFC Contenders

In the NFC, the conference could be wide open. While the Chiefs, Bills, and Bengals seem to be the cream of the crop in the AFC, we have many young teams ready to take the other conference by storm. Although Philadelphia is a pretty heavy favorite to win the NFC again, the 49ers are a very well-balanced team. Dallas and Detroit could make for very interesting teams in 2023 as well. Let us take a look at some very intriguing NFC teams heading into the season:

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers won a whopping 13 games in 2022, but they fell in the NFC Championship for the second straight season. Kyle Shanahan has a great system there, but can they finally get back to the Super Bowl? Hopefully, this time around the 49ers will get more luck from the quarterback position. There is always Christian McCaffrey though who still has the potential to be one of the most valuable running backs in the league. Also, do not forget about the 49ers’ top-ranked defense from last season.

Detroit Lions

The Lions have never made a Super Bowl, but they have become the true dark horse heading into the 2023 season. They have not won a division since 1993, but head coach Dan Campbell — who played tight end in the NFL — brings a newfound toughness to a Detroit team that can explode on offense. Last season, the offense ranked in the top five in points and yards behind Jared Goff’s impressive connection with Amon-Ra St. Brown. Brown has amassed more than 2,000 yards in just two seasons.

What are NFL Futures Bets?

A futures bet is placed on the outcome of a distant NFL event. Your bet wins if you chose the correct outcome. You may bet on more than one outcome at once, however the odds for each outcome will likely differ depending on each selection.

Popular NFL futures bets include odds to win the Super Bowl, AFC and NFC conferences, and each division winner. Additionally, sports betting sites will have odds to win the league MVP and other player awards like the Offensive and Defensive players of the year. You can also bet on teams to win the most or fewest regular season games.

You can place a futures bet up to any point before the actual event begins or the player award is announced. Odds will vary as the season progresses. A team with a strong winning record will gradually become a favorite to win the Super Bowl. On the other hand, an underperforming player will gradually become a long shot underdog to win the league’s MVP award.

NFL futures odds offer sports bettors two opportunities. One, the chance to bet on a distant event with a potentially higher payoff than any single game bet. Two, insight into which teams or players are likely to come out on top by the end of the season. Whether you actually bet the future or not, the changing odds are a useful datapoint to sharpen your NFL handicapping as the season progresses.

NFL Futures Bets

The following are the most popular NFL futures bets. These bets are the most commonly placed by recreational and professional bettors alike. Use the odds to guide your handicapping throughout the season.

When to Bet NFL Futures

There’s an art and science to betting NFL futures. The trick is to properly time your bet. You don’t want to bet too early without knowing much about how your team or player will perform. But you also don’t want to bet so late that your selection is an obvious winner with a small return.

The NFL conference championships take place 2 weeks before the Super Bowl, following the divisional rounds of the NFL playoffs. Unlike picking a team to win the league, your strategy for picking an NFL conference winner will be a little different.

Conference Futures Betting Strategies

First, eliminate the least likely teams from consideration. It will become apparent by mid-season which 3-4 teams will be most likely to win the NFC, with 1-2 teams on the bubble. Focus on these few teams.

Next, review each team’s schedule, particularly matchups in the latter part of the season. Weeks 16-18 could make or break a team’s chances of making the playoffs. Know whether your teams are likely to win or lose their final games of the season. Not all schedules are created equal.

Finally, assess the health of each team’s key players. Will they be strong enough to progress through the playoffs, or will the team need to tap the second string? For that matter, does a team have a good second string? Does the team have players with the experience and maturity to save their reserves for the most important playoff games?
