The first group, and largest, are 870 sports writers and journalists. 145 voters come from one of six different geographical regions: Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South, Southwest, Midwest, and Far West.
The second group is former Heisman Winners. It’s much smaller, numbering around 57 voters total. If an underclassmen (Junior or lower) has previously won the award and is still in school, they are eligible to both vote and be a candidate for present season’s Heisman Award. Ohio State’s Archie Griffin is the only player to win the Heisman Trophy twice.
The third and final group is college football fans. The Heisman Trophy’s official partner, Nissan, has one vote. Nissan awards its single vote based on a fan poll conducted at the end of the season.
