MLB Diamond Dust

Friday in the MLB, New York Mets bionic-elbowed knuckleballer R.A. Dickey became baseball’s first 12-game winner throwing eight innings of three-hit shutout ball against the Dodgers in a 9-0 New York beat down. Dickey had the knuckleball working again striking out 10 and walking just one over 116 pitches. Even with the gimmic pitch, how does this guy not get to start the All-Star game.

The Dodgers are now 1-10 in their L11 games. They’ve lost six straight and have been shut out in four of their last five games. This is a team that just can’t score runs with Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp out of the lineup. Another team that couldn’t score with a fistful of hundreds at Cheetahs is the Seattle Mariners. Last night the M’s were blanked 5-0 by Aaron Cook and the Red Sox. Seattle has scored five runs in their last five games.

Aaron Hill of the Arizona Diamondbacks became the first player since 1931 and only the second in the last 100 years to hit for the cycle twice in the same season. Hill had a single, double, triple, and homer in last night’s Snake 9-3 with over Milwaukee. Hill also turned the trick 12 days ago vs Seattle. His first inning double was also his 1000th hit. The “cycle” is a harder feat to accomplish than a no-hitter.

Lamar Odom returns to LA in four-team deal

Lamar Odom will try and resurrect his career with a second stint with the Los Angeles Clippers. The Mavericks traded Odo to LA in a somewhat complicated four team deal involving Dallas, Houston, Utah, and the Clips. The deal is essentially this.
Dallas will send Odom to the Clippers and the draft rights to Shan Foster to the Utah Jazz. Dallas will receive the draft rights to forward Tadija Dragicevic from Utah and cash considerations from the Houston Rockets in return. The Clippers traded guard Mo Williams to Utah and the draft rights to the 53rd overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft forward Furkan Aldemir to Houston. Williams facilitated the trade by picking up his $8.5 million dollar play option for the upcoming season and agreeing to join the Jazz.

Bolt 2nd in Jamaican trials

Usain Bolt is generally considered the fastest man in the world but last night he was not the fastest man in Jamaica. Yohan Blake smoked Bolt in the Jamaican 100 meter trials beating Bolt by .11 seconds. Stunner ??? Maybe not. Blake is the defending world champion having won in Korea last year in a race that Bolt false-started out. Maybe there’s a new sheriff in town ??? We’ll see soon enough in London. Remember that you can bet the Olympics at any of our world class sponsors.

Play at Congressional suspended, Tiger in the hunt

An overnight storm shredded of golf course at Congressional suspending third round play of the AT&T National. With several trees down, officials say even if the course is readied, fans will not be allowed on Saturday. Hunter Mahan leads Brandon de Jonge, Jimmy Walker, and Robert Garrigus by two shots after 36 holes. Vijay Singh and Stewart Cink are three back. Tiger Woods is five back after shooting 68 on Friday.

Johnson wins pole at Kentucky

Records have been falling everywhere in recent weeks during qualifying and this week at Kentucky is no exception. Jimmy Johnson and Kyle Busch took advantage of a freak windstorm during qualifying that lowered the track temperature 30-40 degrees to set a track record and near track record securing the top two spots in Saturday night’s Quaker State 400. Johnson and Busch were the last two on the track. Busch is the defending champ. Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvik, Ryan Newman, Clint Bowyer, Junior, Brad Keslowski, Jeff Gordon, and Martin Truex Jr round out the first five rows.

These are the favorites at Bovada as of 10:00 AM EST. Check any of SP3′s top-rated sponsors for the best number, props, and driver H2H matchups.

Italy shocks Germany to advance to Euro 2012 Final

Italy got two first-half goals from Mario Balotelli to lead the Italians to a 2-1 win over Germany and a place in the Euro 2012 final against Spain. Balotelli scored on a header in the 20th minute and then cracked a laser from just outside the box in the 36th to put the Germans in a hole that they were unable to dig out of. Germany had three excellent chances in the first 15 minutes but couldn’t convert and finally settled for a consolation penalty in injury time after a handball. Spain is a -185 moneyline favorite over Italy (+145) in Sunday’s 2:45 PM EST final in Kiev. The total is two flat with the Under -140, the Over +110.

MLB Diamond Dust

The San Francisco Giants won their fourth straight game, all by shutout, blanking the Reds 5-0 on a one-hitter by Madison Bumgarner. Cincinnati’s lone safety was a Russ Hanigan single leading off the sixth inning. Bumgarner won his seventh straight decision for his 10th win spinning a 107 pitch complete game striking out eight. The Giants win coupled with the Dodgers 3-2 loss to the Mets gave San Francisco sole possession of first place in the NL West. The Dodgers are 1-9 in their L10, have lost five straight, scored two runs in their last four games, and now in second place for the first time since April 11th.

Little known Czech bounces Rafa from Wimbledon

Men’s top-seed Rafael Nadal has been bounced from in five sets from Wimbledon by big hitting Czech Lukas Rosol, 6-7 (9), 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Rosol, a 26-year-old Czech ranked No. 100, earned the biggest win of his career playing in Wimbledon’s main draw for the first time. He lost each of the past five years in the first round of qualifying. It was Nadal’s earliest exit from a Grand Slam event since 2005 and make the probable semifinal matchup between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic the de facto Men’s final.

DWade needs knee surgery, out of the Olympics

Dwayne Wade will need surgery on his knee and will be unable to compete at the London Olympics. Team USA is already down Derrick Rose and Dwight Howard and the loss of Wade leaves Kobe Bryant as the team’s lone shooting guard. Oklahoma City’s James Harden has been added as a late edition to the talent pool and will be in position to take Wade’s place.

Sid the Kid and Jonathon Quick sign mega-extensions

The face of the Pittsburg Penguins and the NHL, Sidney Crosby, has signed a front-loaded cap-friendly 12-year $104.4 million dollar extension. While there was no doubt that Crosby would get a boatload of money, the length of the contract was surprising given Crosby’s concussion prone past and the fact that the franchise had never signed a contract ever of longer than seven years. The contract is structure to leave the Penguins $15 million under the cap putting Pittsburg in a position to go after free agents Zach Parise and Ryan Suter.

The Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings locked up goalie Jonathon Quick with a ten-year $58 million dollar deal. Quick still has one-year remaining on his current contract that will pay him $1.8 million this upcoming season, his new deal won’t kick in until the 2013-14 season Even with the new deal, Quick will be only the seventh highest paid goalie in the NHL.

While Crosby and Quick have agreed to terms, the deals can’t officially be signed until July 1st.
