World Cup 2026 Betting Odds and Lines

The World Cup is the world’s largest and most popular soccer tournament. The first tournament was held in 1930. FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) organizes the tournament every four years. The men’s national teams of each FIFA member nation compete for 32 berths. FIFA also holds a Women’s World Cup, which debuted in 1991.

A qualifying phase begins 3 years before each World Cup. One country (or sometimes a group of countries) hosts all of the matches at different venues. Teams compete against each other in groups from various regions around the world. For example, the United States, Canada, and Mexico compete in the CONCACAF qualifying region.

32 squads make the World Cup in total. Group winners get automatic entry into the World Cup. FIFA rules determine how many other countries advance based on the strength of their group zone. The entire tournament lasts around a month. Starting in 2026, the tournament phase will increase to 48 teams.

The World Cup is the most-watched and followed sporting event in the world. According to FIFA, 3.57 billion people watched at least some of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The final match was seen live by 1.12 billion viewers, which is 10 times that of a typical Super Bowl.

World Cup Bets

With the World Cup being the most-watched sporting event around the globe, you can imagine that betting on the matches is hugely popular. There was an estimated $1.3 billion wagered on the 2018 World Cup, a staggering figure when compared to other popular events.

Soccer may be a low-scoring sport, but there are quite a few ways to place a bet on a soccer match. Some require more explanation than others, particularly the Asian Handicap.

Moneyline Bet

The moneyline is a simple bet where you try and predict the final outcome of the match. Wager on either team to win or choose a draw with a 3-way moneyline bet.

You can also wager on either team to win with a 2-way moneyline bet. With this bet, a draw would result in a push and your bet being refunded.

3-Way Moneyline Bet

The 3-way moneyline is one of the most popular bets due to draws being a consistent outcome in soccer. You can choose either team to win or bet on a draw.

Sportsbooks determine the likelihood of each outcome along with how the public might bet on a matchup to set the odds. If the public takes more action on one of the three outcomes than expected, sportsbooks will adjust the odds accordingly.

3-Way Moneyline Example

France -165
United States +450
Draw +330

In this example, France winning is the most likely outcome. The minus sign before the odds indicates their status as the betting favorite. A minus before the number means you have to risk $165 to win $100 on the French.

A plus sign ahead of the odds indicates an underdog outcome. A bet on the United States to win is the most unlikely result according to oddsmakers. A U.S. win would pay $450 on a $100 bet.

The odds for a draw in this case are +330, so bet $100 to win $330 in the event of a tie.

Note that 3-way moneyline odds can all have plus values. When this occurs, the favorite would be the lowest value.

In the following example, England is the +115 favorite. The Netherlands is +250, so a win by the Dutch is considered slightly less likely than a draw at +245.

England +115
Netherlands +250
Draw +245

2-Way Moneyline Bet (aka “Tie No Bet”)

As we touched on above, the 2-way moneyline bet means there are two outcomes instead of three. This bet takes the draw out of the equation, as you would get your initial bet amount back in case of a tie. Hence, this bet is also called a 2-Way Tie No Bet.

This is the most popular bet once the teams reach the knockout stage of the tournament, where there must be a winner.

2-Way Moneyline Bet Example

France -425
United States +310

Using the same game as our first 3-way moneyline example, you’ll see that you would have to risk a lot more to win the same amount on a bet for France. That’s because a draw isn’t a losing outcome here.

Since a draw isn’t a negative for a bettor on the 2-way moneyline, you would have to risk more to back the favored team. In this case, it’s $425 on France to win $100. If the match is a draw, you get your $425 bet back.

On the other side, you’re also protected against a draw by betting on the U.S. The payout for a win by the Americans decreases to $310 on a $100 bet. Again, if the final result is a draw, you get your $100 bet back.

Totals Bet (Over-Under)

A totals bet is where oddsmakers set a specific number of goals to be scored in the match. You bet whether the final result will be over or under that number.

It’s important to note that the number set for a totals bet isn’t the number of goals oddsmakers think will be scored. Rather, it’s the number of goals oddsmakers think will cause equal betting on both sides of their line. This ensures a sportsbook doesn’t take too much of a loss on a certain result.

Totals Bet Example

Spain 2.5 o -110
Portugal 2.5 u -110

Here, you would be betting on whether the total number of goals in this match will go over or under 2.5.

The -110 next to each number indicates the odds. You would need to bet $110 to win $100 in either case. Sometimes, oddsmakers will adjust the odds if they believe betting on one side will be heavier than the other.

You’ll notice that the odds here are the same for each side. In either case, you have to risk more than you can win. This $10 difference is called the vig or juice. Sportsbooks use losing bets to pay the winners.

When there’s an equal amount of betting on each side, the book gets a profit of $10 on each losing bet. Think of the vig as a service fee. It allows the sportsbook a better chance to profit and also ensures that your bet will be paid out in case you win.

Asian Handicap – Goal Line Bet (Soccer Point Spread)

The Asian handicap, or goal line bet, is placing a wager on the matchup with a point spread like a hockey puck line or baseball run line. Teams are typically favored by half goal, but more lopsided matchups have been known to have spreads of 1.5 or 2.5 on the goal line.

Asian Handicap – Goal Line Bet Example

Brazil -0.5 -110
Mexico +0.5 -110

In this example, a bet on Brazil would only be successful if they win by 1 or more goals.

Betting on Mexico gives you two ways to win. If Mexico wins outright, you win. If the final result is a draw, you also win. That +0.5 goal line means Mexico can’t lose by more than 1 goal. It includes the possibility of a draw.

If the goal line were -1.5 in favor of Brazil, the bet would only be a winner if the Brazilians were to win the match by two or more goals.

Asian Handicap Split Bet (Split Goal Line Bet)

Asian handicap split lines, or split goal lines, are written in quarter goal increments of 0.25 or 0.75. Examples include 0.25, 0.75, 1.25 or 1.75.

Whenever you see a split line, you’re actually making 2 bets at once. Your wager will be equally split between the two closest half line numbers with the same odds.

Asian Handicap Split Bet Example

Here’s how a $120 bet on Italy with a -0.75 -120 Asian handicap split bet works.

Italy -0.75 -120
Argentina +0.75 +100

The closest half number below -0.75 is -1, so $60 goes for Italy -1. The closest half number above -0.75 is -0.5. The other $60 goes to Italy by -0.5.

The -120 odds is what determines your winning payout. Remember, a minus value is how much you risk to win $100. In this case, you are risking $120 total to win a $100 split between two different lines.

If both bets win, you get $50 for each totaling $100. If one wins and one pushes, you get $50 plus $60 refunded. And if both lose, you get $0.

Asian Handicap Split Bet Detailed Example

How much you win or lose on the Asian handicap split bet depends on the game’s final outcome. Here’s how your bet on Italy -0.75 at -120 odds plays out.

Italy wins by 2 or more goals
Both bets win. Italy’s 2 goal victory is greater than each bet at -0.5 and -1.

The $120 bet to win $100 was split $60 each for Italy -0.5 and Italy -1. You win $50 each for a total of $100.

Italy wins by 1 goal
Italy by -0.5 wins, Italy by -1 pushes. In this case, Italy’s 1 goal victory is only greater than the bet at -0.5.

Your $120 bet to win $100 was split 2 ways for $60 on each line, -0.5 and -1. You win $50 on the bet against -0.5 and get $60 refunded for the push against -1. Total win: $50.

Italy draws or loses outright
Both bets lose. A draw means a 0-goal margin of victory over Argentina, and 0 is less than both -0.5 and -1.

You lose the $60 against -0.5 and the $60 against -1. Total loss: $120.

Futures Bet

A futures bet is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of betting on a single-match result, you’re placing a wager on an event in the future.

The most popular World Cup futures bet is the tournament winner. You can also bet on group stage winners and individual honors like who the top goal scorer will be over the course of the entire World Cup.

Futures Bet Example

2022 FIFA World Cup Winner
Team Odds
Brazil +400
Argentina +550
France +650
England +800
Spain +850
Germany +1000
Netherlands +1200
Portugal +1400
Belgium +1400
Denmark +2800
Croatia +5000

Unless one team is a heavy favorite to win a championship, most teams will have plus odds. So the smallest number would indicate the favorite. With so many quality teams, it’s rarer to have overwhelming favorites in the World Cup than it may be in a national club league like the Premier League or La Liga.

According to odds that were available about two weeks before the start of the event, Brazil is a slight favorite to win the 2022 World Cup. A $100 bet on them would net $400 if they were to win the title.

Nations like Argentina, France, England, and Spain would be considered favorites as well at their prices. Once you get into the +1000 range, those teams are a bit more of a longshot, and it drops quickly with Denmark, Croatia, and other teams not listed. Team USA, for example, is +13000.

You can typically bet on futures as soon as the previous World Cup ends. As the event gets closer, a variety of factors will influence and change the odds throughout the season. When it comes to the World Cup, some teams may not even qualify. Things that affect futures odds include players joining and leaving a team, injuries, how a team performs in qualifying stages, and how difficult their group draw is.

World Cup Major Events

There are three stages of the World Cup process that begins within a year of the previous tournament’s completion.

Qualification

FIFA has six continental zones: Africa, Asia, North and Central America and Caribbean, South America, Oceania, and Europe. FIFA decides how many teams will advance based on the strength of the nations in each zone. Zone organizers decide the qualifying format for their tournament. Each zone’s tournament takes place over a 2-year period..

Group Stage

The 32 teams that make the World Cup travel to the host nation to start the tournament. The teams are divided into eight groups of four teams. In the Group Stage, a round-robin tournament is contested where each team plays all the others in its group.

A points system is used to determine the standings within each group. Three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. There are a number of tiebreakers used to determine the finishing order. Different statistics add or subtract from the team’s point tally. The most common include:

  • Positive – Combined goal differential from all matches
  • Positive – Combined goals scored
  • Negative – Total yellow and total red cards issued

The top-two finishing teams from each group advance to the knockout stage. The group stage rules will change in 2026, when it increases to 48 teams.

Knockout Stage

The 16 teams remaining after the knockout stage compete in a single-elimination tournament to determine the World Cup champion. If a match is tied after the 90 minutes of regulation, two 15-minute periods of extra time are contested. If it is still tied, a penalty-kick shootout is held to determine the winner.

The only time the single-elimination format is broken in the knockout stage is following the semifinal matches. In this case, the two losing clubs in the semifinal meet to determine the third-place finisher.

When to Bet on World Cup Matches

Different betting strategies dictate whether to bet on a match early or wait until closer to kickoff.

If you are really familiar with the teams, you can check the early odds to determine if there is value on a particular outcome. Review how one team has played against the other, recent matchup results, and player injuries. Jumping on a bad line can give you great value before the oddsmakers fix their mistake.

Waiting for the public to play their hand can also create value on the back end. Using this strategy, take note of the opening lines when they come out and look for any changes.

World Cup Betting Odds For Fun

If you’re in it for fun and to win money, consider going against public opinion. Sometimes, contrarian betting can be profitable. Back a team that is getting more favorable odds closer to match time. This means that oddsmakers are trying to entice people to bet on that side because most of the public money is going in the other direction.

Waiting until closer to kickoff also gives you time for any late injuries or other news to develop that could affect the match result. So unless something really stands out to you when the lines for a match are released, you are likely better off waiting to place bets.

Single-Game Alternatives

Even though there are no ties in the World Cup knockout stage (round of 16 to the final), there is still a 3-way moneyline bet option. This bet takes just the first 90 minutes of a regulation match into account. For instance, here are the odds from the 2014 World Cup Final:

Germany +131
Draw +228
Argentina +254

A 2-way moneyline bet is just a bet on who will win the match with extra time and penalty kicks included. A draw after 90 minutes is not a possible result on this bet. The 2-way moneyline odds for the championship in 2014 were as follows:

Germany -148
Argentina +136

For reference, Germany won the match 1-0 with a goal in extra time. So the draw was the winning bet on the 3-way moneyline, and Germany won the match as the favorite on the 2-way moneyline.

Best World Cup Teams

Brazil

Brazil holds two distinct honors that sets them apart from all other nations. One, it has the most World Cup titles (5). Two, it’s the only country to appear in every FIFA World Cup tournament, as of 2022.

“A Selecao,” translated to “The National Team,” was last eliminated from group play in 1970. Before that, they won three out of four World Cups from 1958-70. Their fourth title came in the United States in 1994 and most recently in South Korea and Japan in 2002. The club finished fourth in Brazil in 2014, famously losing to Germany 7-1 in the semifinal.

The two most famous soccer players from Brazil are Pele and Ronaldo. Pele played in the first three championships. Ronaldo was a part of the team for the final two. Ronaldo scored 15 goals in 19 World Cup matches, which is second all-time. Pele’s 12 goals puts him in fifth place on the all-time list.

Germany

Germany comes into the 2022 World Cup with four titles, tying them with Italy for the second-most behind Brazil. Italy, however, did not qualify for the 2022 tournament. The team is known as the “Nationalelf” (National Eleven) and has been one of the best teams in recent years, finishing in at least third place three times since 2006. Germany’s past World Cup wins were in 1954, 1974, 1990, and 2014.

Of the 13 people in history who have double-digit goals in the FIFA World Cup, five are Germans. With two goals in 2014, Miroslav Klose became the all-time goal scorer in FIFA World Cup history with 16. Gerd Muller’s 14 goals ranks third behind Klose and Brazil’s Ronaldo. Jurgen Klinsmann has 11 while Helmut Rahn and Thomas Muller each have 10.

France

Of all nations, France has the most success as of late. “Les Bleus” (The Blues) won two and finished runner-up twice in the past seven tournaments. The French team went into the 2022 World Cup tied with Argentina and Uruguay for two Cups and is one of six nations to have more than one World Cup to its credit. The 2022 World Cup Final saw the French team unable to defend its 2018 title, losing in penalty kicks to Argentina.

Thierry Henry and Zinedine Zidane were the two stars of the 1998 Cup win that took place on home soil. Henry leads all Frenchmen with 17 appearances and six goals. Zidane has five goals to his credit. Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe each scored four goals to lead Les Bleus to the 2018 title in Russia. Mbappe added eight tallies in the 2022 tournament and is now tied with Pele at 12 for sixth all-time. Just Fontaine’s 13 goals in the 1958 World Cup remains the record for goals in a single World Cup and ranks him fourth on the all-time list.

Do Your Research

Be sure to review the men’s FIFA world rankings before the tournament begins. It’s a great basis for handicapping each national team, allowing you to assess each’ teams strengths and weaknesses against various international opponents.

It’s estimated that 70% of all of the sports betting that takes place worldwide is wagered on soccer. Coupling that with the fact that the World Cup is one of the most-bet sporting events, you have to do your homework if you are to discover advantages.

Using a site that keeps track of team and player statistics each year, like FB Ref can help you discover trends. This site also tracks qualifying matchups, so all the information is at your disposal. Watch the matches and follow the news. Pay close attention to injury reports, suspensions, team performance in their most recent matches, and how each player is performing on their club team. You’ll want to look at both individual and team performance when it comes to studying for World Cup matches.

Exploit Public Bias

Use public biases to increase the value of your bets. Given the massive amount of wagering taking place on the World Cup, you can be sure that a great many of them are being made on the favorite team to win.

Casual bettors are going to gravitate towards countries known for its soccer programs, such as Brazil, Germany, France, and England. Odds may also be skewed against the U.S. men’s national team. The best finish by the Americans was the quarterfinals in 2002, and the team didn’t even qualify for the 2018 event. But the USMNT will still garner a fair amount of action from casual bettors, and oddsmakers will take advantage of that bias. You can too by studying the matchup.

Another popular public bias is on the totals bet. Casual bettors like scoring and want to root for goals. That means they gravitate towards taking the over. However, if your research suggests a lower number of goals than the current totals odds, grab the value that comes with betting on the under.
