Eastern Conference Contenders

The 2023-24 NBA season will be very exciting, and the Eastern Conference expects to have some true superpower teams. The conference champion will take on the winner of the Western Conference, which included an impressive Nuggets team that surprised everyone last season. Who will take the East this time around? Will the Miami Heat repeat as conference champions, will the Celtics or Bucks exact revenge, or will there be a dark horse team that surprises the conference?

Boston Celtics

After falling to the Miami Heat in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals, the Celtics knew they had to retool the roster and that they did. The Celtics acquired Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday in two separate trades, and they no longer have Marcus Smart, Malcolm Brogdon, Robert Williams III, and Grant Williams. Boston needs Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown to step up when the lights shine the brightest, and if they do that will show why they are the Eastern Conference favorite.

Milwaukee Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks surprised the NBA world by acquiring Damian Lillard, and, for a moment, the Bucks were the NBA’s projected top squad. However, after the Celtics made their second blockbuster trade of the offseason, the Bucks were pushed to the No. 2 squad in terms of the projections. Can Giannis Antetokounmpo and company win another title? Can Lillard help him get back to the top of the NBA? The Bucks seem to be one of the top two teams in the NBA, so maybe the winner of the East will win the NBA title. That team can be the Bucks.

What are NBA Futures Bets?

A futures bet is placed on the outcome of a distant NBA event. Your bet wins if you chose the correct outcome. You may bet on more than one outcome at once, however the odds for each outcome will likely differ depending on each selection.

Popular NBA futures bets include odds to win the NBA Finals, Eastern and Western Conference winners, and each division winner. Additionally, sports betting sites will have odds to win player awards like the NBA MVP award.

You can place a futures bet up to any point before the actual event begins or the player award is announced. Odds will vary as the season progresses. A team with a strong winning record will gradually become a favorite to win their conference and possibly the NBA Finals. On the other hand, an underperforming player will gradually become a long shot underdog to win the NBA MVP award.

NBA futures odds offer sports bettors two opportunities. One, the chance to bet on a distant event with a potentially higher payoff than any single game bet. Two, insight into which teams or players are likely to come out on top by the end of the season. Whether you actually bet the future or not, the changing odds are a useful datapoint to sharpen your basketball handicapping as the season progresses.

NBA Futures Bets

The following are the most popular NBA futures bets. These bets are the most commonly placed by recreational and professional bettors alike. Use the odds to guide your handicapping throughout the season.

When to Bet NBA Futures

There’s an art and science to betting NBA futures. The trick is to properly time your bet. You don’t want to bet too early without knowing much about how your team or player will perform. But you also don’t want to bet so late that your selection is an obvious winner with a small return.

The NBA conference championships series take place before the NBA Finals, following the conference semifinals of the NBA playoffs. Unlike picking a team to win the league, your strategy for picking a NBA conference winner will be a little different.

Conference Futures Betting Strategies

First, eliminate the least likely teams from consideration. It will become apparent by mid-season which 3-4 teams will be most likely to win the Eastern Conference, with 1-2 teams on the bubble. Focus on these few teams.

Next, review each team’s schedule, particularly matchups in the latter part of the season. Games played in February and March could make or break a team’s chances of making the playoffs. Know whether your teams are likely to win or lose critical games towards the end of the season. Not all schedules are created equal.

Finally, assess the health of each team’s key players. Will they be strong enough to progress through the playoffs, or will the team need to tap the second string? For that matter, does a team have a good second string? Does the team have players with the experience and maturity to save their reserves for the most important playoff games?
