Current Serie A Betting Odds and Lines

Serie A is the top tier of the Italian football league system (aka Italian football pyramid) and represents the best soccer league in Italy. That means Serie A betting odds attract substantial attention from both US and global bettors. According to UEFA rankings, Serie A ranks third among European soccer leagues, behind the English Premier League and Spain’s La Liga.

The league as it is known today began in 1929. It consists of 20 teams. The team with the most points at the end of the 38-match season is the league champion. The Serie A championship is known as the “scudetto,” meaning “small shield” in Italian. This is because the winning team wears a patch on their kit with a shield featuring the colors of the Italian flag during the following season.

The top-four teams from Serie A qualify for the UEFA Champions League, which is a 32-team tournament that crowns the top team in Europe. At the end of the season, the bottom three Serie A teams are relegated (demoted) to the second-tier Serie B. The top-three teams from the Serie B are promoted to Serie A for the following season.

Serie A has historically been home to some of the greatest players in the sport’s history. The Ballon d’Or, which is awarded to the best soccer player in the world each year, has been given to a Serie A player more than in any other league except La Liga. As of 2022, Juventus has also produced more World Cup champions (25) than any other team in the sport.

Serie A Bets

Soccer may be a low-scoring sport, but there are quite a few ways to place a bet on a soccer match. Some require more explanation than others, particularly the Asian Handicap.

Moneyline Bet

The moneyline is a simple bet where you try and predict the final outcome of the match. Wager on either team to win or choose a draw with a 3-way moneyline bet.

You can also wager on either team to win with a 2-way moneyline bet. With this bet, a draw would result in a push and your bet being refunded.

3-Way Moneyline Bet

The 3-way moneyline is one of the most popular bets due to draws being a consistent outcome in soccer. You can choose either team to win or bet on a draw.

Sportsbooks determine the likelihood of each outcome along with how the public might bet on a matchup to set the odds. If the public takes more action on one of the three outcomes than expected, sportsbooks will adjust the odds accordingly.

3-Way Moneyline Example

Inter Milan -165
Roma +450
Draw +330

In this example, Inter Milan winning is the most likely outcome. The minus sign before the odds indicates their status as the betting favorite. A minus before the number means you have to risk $165 to win $100.

A plus sign ahead of the odds indicates an underdog outcome. A bet on Roma to win is the most unlikely result according to oddsmakers. A Roma win would pay $450 on a $100 bet.

The odds for a draw in this case are +330, so bet $100 to win $330 in the event of a tie.

Note that 3-way moneyline odds can all have plus values. When this occurs, the favorite would be the lowest value.

In the following example, Napoli is the +115 favorite. Bologna is +250, so a Bologna win is considered slightly less likely than a draw at +245.

Napoli +115
Bologna +250
Draw +245

2-Way Moneyline Bet (aka “Tie No Bet”)

As we touched on above, the 2-way moneyline bet means there are two outcomes instead of three. This bet takes the draw out of the equation, as you would get your initial bet amount back in case of a tie. Hence, this bet is also called a 2-Way Tie No Bet.

2-Way Moneyline Bet Example

AC Milan -425
Roma +310

Using the same game as our first 3-way moneyline example, you’ll see that you would have to risk a lot more to win the same amount on a bet for AC Milan. That’s because a draw isn’t a losing outcome here.

Since a draw isn’t a negative for a bettor on the 2-way moneyline, you would have to risk more to back the favored team. In this case, it’s $425 on AC Milan to win $100. If the match is a draw, you get your $425 bet back.

On the other side, you’re also protected against a draw by betting on Roma. The payout for a Roma win decreases to $310 on a $100 bet. Again, if the final result is a draw, you get your $100 bet back.

Possible Moneyline Outcomes
  • Atalanta bettors risk $100 to win $255 at +255 odds. The implied probability for Atalanta is 28.17%.
  • Napoli bettors risk $100 to win $100 at +100 odds. The implied probability for Napoli is 50%.
  • Draw bettors risk $100 to win $270 at +270 odds. The implied probability for Draw is 27.03%.

Totals Bet (Over-Under)

A totals bet is where oddsmakers set a specific number of goals to be scored in the match. You bet whether the final result will be over or under that number.

It’s important to note that the number set for a totals bet isn’t the number of goals oddsmakers think will be scored. Rather, it’s the number of goals oddsmakers think will cause equal betting on both sides of their line. This ensures a sportsbook doesn’t take too much of a loss on a certain result.

Totals Bet Example

Fiorentina 2.5 o -110
Atalanta 2.5 u -110

Here, you would be betting on whether the total number of goals in this match will go over or under 2.5.

The -110 next to each number indicates the odds. You would need to bet $110 to win $100 in either case. Sometimes, oddsmakers will adjust the odds if they believe betting on one side will be heavier than the other.

You’ll notice that the odds here are the same for each side. In either case, you have to risk more than you can win. This $10 difference is called the vig or juice. Sportsbooks use losing bets to pay the winners.

When there’s an equal amount of betting on each side, the book gets a profit of $10 on each losing bet. Think of the vig as a service fee. It allows the sportsbook a better chance to profit and also ensures that your bet will be paid out in case you win.

Asian Handicap – Goal Line Bet (Soccer Point Spread)

The Asian handicap, or goal line bet, is placing a wager on the matchup with a point spread like a hockey puck line or baseball run line. Teams are typically favored by a half goal, but more lopsided matchups have been known to have spreads of 1.5 or 2.5 on the goal line.

Asian Handicap – Goal Line Bet Example

Juventus -0.5 -110
Lazio +0.5 -110

In this example, a bet on Juventus would only be successful if they win by 1 or more goals.

Betting on Lazio gives you two ways to win. If they win outright, you win. If the final result is a draw, you also win. That +0.5 goal line means Lazio can’t lose by more than 1 goal. It includes the possibility of a draw.

If the goal line were -1.5 in favor of Juventus, the bet would only be a winner if they were to win the match by two or more goals.

Asian Handicap Split Bet (Split Goal Line Bet)

Asian handicap split lines, or split goal lines, are written in quarter goal increments of 0.25 or 0.75. Examples include 0.25, 0.75, 1.25 or 1.75.

Whenever you see a split line, you’re actually making 2 bets at once. Your wager will be equally split between the two closest half-line numbers with the same odds.

Asian Handicap Split Bet Example

Here’s how a $120 bet on Real Betis with a -0.75 -120 Asian handicap split bet works.

Inter Milan -0.75 -120
Torino +0.75 +100

The closest half number below -0.75 is -1, so $60 goes for Inter Milan -1. The closest half number above -0.75 is -0.5. The other $60 goes to Inter Milan by -0.5.

The -120 odds is what determines your winning payout. Remember, a minus value is how much you risk to win $100. In this case, you are risking $120 total to win a $100 split between two different lines.

If both bets win, you get $50 for each totaling $100. If one wins and one pushes, you get $50 plus $60 refunded. And if both lose, you get $0.

Asian Handicap Split Bet Detailed Example

How much you win or lose on the Asian handicap split bet depends on the game’s final outcome. Here’s how your bet on Inter Milan -0.75 at -120 odds plays out.

Inter Milan wins by 2 or more goals
Both bets win. Inter Milan’s 2-goal victory is greater than each bet at -0.5 and -1.

The $120 bet to win $100 was split $60 each for Inter Milan -0.5 and Inter Milan -1. You win $50 each for a total of $100.

Inter Milan wins by 1 goal
Inter Milan by -0.5 wins, Inter Milan by -1 pushes. In this case, Inter Milan’s 1-goal victory is only greater than the bet at -0.5.

Your $120 bet to win $100 was split 2 ways for $60 on each line, -0.5 and -1. You win $50 on the bet against -0.5 and get $60 refunded for the push against -1. Total win: $50.

Inter Milan draws or loses outright
Both bets lose. A draw means a 0-goal margin of victory over Torino, and 0 is less than both -0.5 and -1.

You lose the $60 against -0.5 and the $60 against -1. Total loss: $120.

Futures Bet

A futures bet is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of betting on a single-match result, you’re placing a wager on an event in the future.

The most popular Serie A futures bet is for the league’s champion. You can also bet on individual honors like who the season’s top goal scorer will be.

2023 Serie A Winner
Team Odds
Inter Milan +175
Juventus +190
AC Milan +400
Roma +800
Napoli +1600
Atalanta +2000
Lazio +5000
Fiorentina +8000
AC Monza +10000

All teams will almost always have plus odds, so the smallest number would indicate the favorite.

For 2022-23, Inter Milan is close to even or minus odds. This indicates that they–along with Juventus–are a heavy favorite to win the championship this season. A $100 bet on Inter Milan to win the title would pay $175 if they win.

With such a small difference to Juventus’ +190, they are virtually co-favorites. AC Milan and Roma would also have to be considered likely contenders. Napoli or Atalanta winning would be somewhat of an upset. Then the odds get long for Lazio and the other teams below. It’s not on our list, but the odds for Leece and Salernitana winning Serie A are a whopping +450000.

Longshot Serie A Teams Don’t Win

It’s extremely rare that teams in the +5000 range and longer win soccer championships. The lack of a postseason tournament makes it less likely that an underdog team can get hot and win, which occasionally occurs in North American sports. The best example of this in soccer is Leicester City winning the English Premier League in 2016 with preseason odds of +5000.

Serie A Futures Betting Odds Will Change

You typically can bet on futures as soon as the previous season ends. As the year progresses, a variety of factors will influence and change the odds throughout the season. Things that affect futures odds include players joining and leaving a team, injuries, and how the team performs during the season.

In 2021-22, AC Milan won Serie A with preseason odds of +1200. But after starting the year with a 10-1-0 record, those odds were down to +240 by November.

Serie A Major Events

Serie A follows the format of most top-tier international soccer leagues, such as the English Premier League, and doesn’t crown its champion through a playoff format like major North American sports.

Instead, the 20 Serie A teams compete in a double round-robin format, playing each team home and away for a total of 38 games contested from August through May. Teams earn three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. After the final games conclude, the team that has the highest point total is the Serie A champion.

In the event that two or more teams are tied atop the standings, a series of tiebreakers are applied to determine the champion, which four Serie A teams advance to the UEFA Champions League, and which three teams are relegated:

  • Head-to-head records (results and points)
  • Goal difference of head-to-head games
  • Goal difference overall
  • Higher number of goals scored

If the tie is not broken via these methods, a tiebreaker match is held at a neutral site. Prior to 2005-06, playoff matches were contested if teams were tied in points. The only time the Serie A championship was decided in a playoff was when Bologna beat Inter Milan in 1964. The most-recent Serie A playoff match was held in 2004-05 to determine a relegation spot.

Since the rules were changed in 2005-06, there have been no playoff matchups in Serie A.

When to Bet on Serie A Matches

Teams in Serie A typically play once per week. Different betting strategies dictate whether to bet on a match early or wait until closer to kickoff.

If you are really familiar with the teams, you can check the early odds to determine if there is value in a particular outcome. Review how one team has played against the other, recent matchup results, and player injuries. Jumping on a bad line can give you great value before the oddsmakers fix their mistake.

Waiting for the public to play their hand can also create value on the back end. Using this strategy, take note of the opening lines when they come out. Being the most popular sports league in Italy and also among the biggest worldwide, Serie A generates plenty of betting action. Many of these bets come from casual bettors who are placing bets for fun.

Serie A Betting Odds for Fun

If you’re in it for fun and to win money, consider going against public opinion. Sometimes, contrarian betting can be profitable. Back a team that is getting more favorable odds closer to match time. This means that oddsmakers are trying to entice people to bet on that side because most of the public money is going in the other direction.

Waiting until closer to kickoff also gives you time for any late injuries or other news to develop that could affect the match result. So unless something really stands out to you when the lines for a match are released, you are likely better off waiting to place bets.

Popular Serie A Teams

Juventus

Juventus is the most successful and most popular team in Serie A. Based out of Turin, Italy, Juventus was an original Serie A team that debuted in 1929-30. Juventus won its 34th championship in 2020. In addition, the team has a combined 117 million followers on social media, which is more than double that of the second-place team.

The club, colloquially known as Juve, was relegated to Serie B in 2006-07 due to their part in a match-fixing scandal. But they were promoted for the 2007-08 season after winning Serie B.

An unprecedented level of success followed after 2008. Juventus went unbeaten in the 2011-12 season, claiming the first of nine-straight Serie A championships through 2020.
Despite that run of success, it did not win a UEFA Champions League title in that span. It does have two titles, however, winning one in 1984-85 and another in 1995-96. Alessandro Del Pietro is the team’s all-time leading goal scorer, tallying 208 in Serie A and 290 total from 1993-2012. During the dominant run of the 2010s, Paulo Dybala led the club with 82 goals from 2015-22.

AC Milan

AC Milan has the second-most fans (nearly 49 million across social media platforms). In 2022 they won their 16th Serie A title, which puts them one short of crosstown rival Inter Milan for second in Serie A history behind Juventus. Where it does have Juve beat, however, is in international play. AC Milan’s seven UEFA Champions League titles are second only in Europe to Real Madrid of La Liga.

AC Milan shares its stadium, San Siro, with Inter Milan. The grounds hold just over 80,000 supporters, making it the largest soccer stadium in Italy and one of the biggest in all of Europe. Naturally, the rivalry with Inter Milan is one of the fiercest in European soccer. Known as the Derby della Madonnina, the teams meet at least twice a year (twice in Serie A and in other competitions like the Coppa Italia).

AC Milan not only holds the Serie A record for an unbeaten streak, but their 58 matches without a loss is the longest streak among the major European leagues. In 1993-94, AC Milan won the UEFA Champions League by allowing a record two goals the entire tournament. Gunnar Nordahi is the long-standing record holder when it comes to AC Milan goals, tallying 221 total from 1949-56.

Inter Milan

Inter Milan, known officially as Internazionale and Inter for short, won its 17th Serie A title in 2020-21. It has also collected three UEFA Champions League titles–the most recent coming in 2009-10. Juventus’ 2006-07 relegation due to the match-fixing scandal made Inter Milan the only team to play in Serie A in each year of its existence.

We mentioned the rivalry between the teams from Milan above. As of 2022, Inter Milan has the edge over its rivals by winning 85 matches, losing 78, and playing to 69 draws since the first meeting in 1909.

The top-six goal scorers in team history are all Italians that played decades ago. Giuseppe Meazza leads the way with 284 total goals from 1927-40 and again in the 1946-47 season. The only goal scorer from the 2000s in the top 10 is Mauro Icardi with 124 from 2013-19. Brazilian star Ronaldo played for Inter, winning the Ballon d’Or to signify the soccer player of the year in 1997.

AS Roma

AS Roma is one of two teams based in the Italian capital of Rome. They have only been relegated once and have been a part of Serie A consecutively since 1952-53. Roma has three Serie A titles with the most recent coming in 2000-01. Roma does not have a UEFA Champions League title as of 2022.

The club has played in Stadio Olimpico since 1953. It holds over 70,000 fans. They share the stadium with Lazio. Their two meetings each year are called the Derby della Capitale.

The team, referred to as “I Giallorossi” (The Yellow and Reds) based on their crest and kit colors, is led in all-time appearances and goals by Francesco Totti. The Italian only played professionally for Roma, scoring 250 goals in 619 appearances from 1992-2017. He also scored 58 goals for the Italian national team, including leading the “Azzurri” (Blues) to the 2016 FIFA World Cup title.

SSC Napoli

The club known as Napoli, officially called Societa Sportiva Calcio (SSC) Napoli, is based out of Naples. It has two Serie A titles, both of which came in the 1980s when star Diego Maradona was leading Napoli after the Argentinian was transferred from Barcelona of La Liga for a then-record deal worth 12-million Euros. Maradona became a cult figure in Naples and Southern Italy, as it was the first Serie A title won by a team in that region. The team’s stadium was named after Maradona following his death in 2020.

The team slumped a bit in the 1990s. Napoli was actually in Serie B for much of the 2000s before a resurgence in the 2010s that may have led to a title if it wasn’t for Juventus’s dominance. Of the nine-straight titles that Juve won from 2012-20, Napoli finished second in the standings four times. The club’s most successful player in that span, Dries Mertens, holds the record for most goals scored with 113 in Serie A and 148 overall.

Do Your Research

It’s estimated that 70% of all of the sports betting that takes place worldwide is wagered on soccer. Serie A is Italy’s most popular league to bet on. It’s also one of the most popular soccer leagues in the world. Oddsmakers are paying close attention to the lines they’re setting. This makes it difficult to find weaknesses or value in a lot of wagers.

To counter this, you need to be as prepared as possible. Watch the matches and follow the news. Pay close attention to injury reports, suspensions, head-to-head records, and team performance in their most recent matches. How a team performed in their last three or four matches could provide more useful information than their statistics for the entire season.

Fortunately, there are plenty of websites with useful handicapping information. Handicapping is the process of studying data to make informed sports betting wagers. Here are some helpful resources:

Know What Home Field Advantage Is Worth

Soccer game scoring is limited. Therefore, any scoring advantage is in your favor. Footy Stats has a page showing which Serie A clubs have home-field advantage each season.

In the 2021-22 season, 16 of 20 Serie A teams were either even or had a home-field advantage when considering the goals they scored versus the goals they allowed. All but five teams scored more goals at home. Just six of the 20 teams allowed more goals at home than they did in away matches.

Only two clubs averaged more than two goals a game last year. Even a small advantage can make a big difference in the outcome of a match.

However, away teams do win. By following these statistics, it can be easier to pinpoint when a team will win on the road. Doing your research and knowing when to take an away team can lead to big wins since oddsmakers will typically give a bump to the home team.

Exploit Public Bias

Use public biases to increase the value of your bets. Given that 70% of all sports bets in the world are placed on soccer, you can be sure that a great many of them are being made on the favorite team to win.

So, what are the most popular teams? A quick scroll up this page will give you your answer: Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter Milan are the most popular and historically successful Serie A teams.

As a result, oddsmakers will nudge odds in favor of teams opposing those clubs. A bet on an opposing team may offer higher value, especially if you determine they have a real chance to win.

Another popular public bias is on the totals bet. Casual bettors like scoring and want to root for goals. They gravitate towards taking the over. However, if your research suggests a lower number of goals than the current totals odds, grab the value that comes with betting on the under.

In the 2021-22 Serie A season, a total of three goals were scored most frequently–23% of the time. Two or fewer goals were scored in 44% of matches. At halftime, either one or zero goals were scored in 63% of all matches that season.

Though the percentages may lead you toward the under, be sure to research the teams involved in a matchup before placing a bet.
