Manchester United’s Transfer Targets After Ronaldo Departure

Manchester United are still in a transition phase with new manager Erik ten Hag. The team needs to address the recent shocking departure of Cristiano Ronaldo on top of various other gaps in the squad.  There are also issues surrounding the future status of Marcus Rashford’s contract extension, and the fitness of star player Jadon Sancho. Also, Harry Maguire has been giving the manager something to think about with some solid World Cup displays. And all this in the shadow of a potential takeover as the owners look to sell the club.

Manchester United Need to Replace Cristiano Ronaldo

In the Premier League January transfer window Manchester United will need to address the gap left by club legend Cristiano Ronaldo. Manchester United have been linked with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portuguese teammate Goncalo Ramos of Benfica. At 22, Goncalo Ramos could be a long term solution for the red devils.

Also, there have been rumours of The Netherlands top scorer in the World Cup, Cody Gakpo, making the move to Manchester from PSV. Obviously, Manchester United are normally forced to pay huge transfer fees, but Gakpo seems reasonably priced despite his solid performances in Qatar.

The club has also been linked with Ivan Toney of Brentford. After missing out on the World Cup, Toney is considered the next top striker in England. At 26 years old he still has the peak of his career ahead of him, but Brentford could ask for around $50 million due to his Premier League performances.

Evidently, Manchester United need to make some big moves as they currently sit at +5000 to win the Premier League this season.

Marcus Rashford’s Contract is Expiring Next Summer

With Cristiano Ronaldo’s behind them, Manchester United may be losing another club legend in Marcus Rashford. If Manchester United cannot come to an agreement with the England international, he will be able to leave on a free transfer in the summer of 2023. Unfortunately for Manchester United, Marcus Rashford may be tempted by offers from PSG and Real Madrid.

With Karim Benzema turning 35 years old, Marcus Rashford could improve Real Madrid’s chance of winning La Liga from current odds of +130.

Jadon Sancho Fitness Struggles

Another worry for Manchester United in attack is the struggle for Jadon Sancho to reach full fitness. After being left out of the World Cup squad, Jadon Sancho is having trouble mentally preparing for the return to club football. Undoubtedly, this puts even more pressure on Manchester United to reinforce in January.

Jadon Sancho moved to Manchester United for $85 million, the third highest fee for an English player.

Erik ten Hag Wants a Right Back

With all the attention on the forwards, ten Hag has been requesting a right back since he arrived. Similarly to the Cody Gakpo link, the Dutch manager seems to be focusing on players from his home country. Erik ten Hag is targeting the two Dutch right backs that were in the Netherlands squad, Denzel Dumfries of Inter Milan and Jeremie Frimpong at Leverkusen.

Apparently, Dumfries seems like the most likely target, however Inter Milan would be reluctant to sell as the reigning champions sit at +650 to win Serie A.

Overall, this could be a busy transfer window for Manchester United with players issues popping up weekly at the moment. The club may also have new owners in the near future, which could mean more change and upheaval.
