Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer win MLB Cy Young awards

Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer win MLB Cy Young awards

No surprises in this year’s Cy Young balloting with Max Scherzer winning in the American League and Clayton Kershaw winning in the National League.

Scherzer received 28 of 30 first place votes to roll over Yu Darvish and third place Hisashi Iwakuma. Scherzer, 29, went 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA (145 ERA+) in 32 starts this past season, but his Cy Young case goes way beyond win-loss record. He was top five in the league in ERA, ERA+, innings (214 1/3), strikeouts (240), WHIP (0.97), K/BB (4.28) and WAR (6.7).

Kershaw won his second Cy Young in three years garnering 29 of 30 first place votes and beat out second place Adam Wainwright and third place Jose Fernandez. Kershaw, 25, went 16-9 with a 1.83 ERA (194 ERA+) in 33 starts this past season. He led all of baseball in ERA, ERA+, WHIP (0.92) and WAR (7.8) while leading the NL in strikeouts (232). Colts/Titans Thursday Night Football preview

Week 11 of the NFL kicks off tonight with the Colts meeting the Titans in Nashville. Tough game to gauge here. The Colts have won eight of the last nine in the series but it’s not easy to trust a team that has been outscored 49-3 in the first half of their last two games against losing records. Indy is working on a 28/99 run/pass sequence at the moment. Tennessee has lost four of five after 3-1 start. The Titans have lost Jake Locker for the year and though Ryan Fitzpatrick has experience, he’s 0-2 as a starter this year. AFC South home teams are 0-4 ATS in division games this year. Indy is -2.5 with the total 42 1/2. Expecting perfect football weather in Music City.

Georgia Tech visits Clemson in ACC NCAAF action

Two games on tonight’s college football card with the feature matchup between 6-3 Georgia Tech and 8-1 Clemson in Death Valley. The Yellow Jackets have won three straight after losses in the Virginia Tech, Miami Fla, and BY gauntlet. Clemson has won a couple of road games after getting smoked by Florida State. The dog is 13-3 over the L16 in the series. Clemson is a -11 point favorite with the total set at 58 1/2. Weather will be perfect with the temperature at game time expected to be around 45.

Mexico drills Kiwis 5-1 to “almost” punch World Cup ticket

Mexico pretty much punched their ticket to the 2014 Worl Cup in Brazil with a 5-1 win over New Zealand in their home leg of the heads up qualifier. Mexico scored just seven goals in their 10 Concacaf qualifying matches but scored early and often against a Kiwi outfit that seemed to struggle with the Mexico City altitude. The Tris led 2-0 at the half and led 5-0 before Chris James broke through late for New Zealand. Mexico must still survive the away leg next week in Wellington where New Zealand would need to win 4-0 or 6-1 to advance. Not very likely.
