Breeders’ Cup Turf Bets
The most common way to bet on the Breeders’ Cup is to pick a horse to win a particular race. In this case, you’d be placing a “win” bet. You can also bet on a horse to “place”, “show”, or combine all three into one “win place show“, or “across the board” bet.
The Breeders’ Cup also offers a full menu of exotic betting options, including exacta, trifecta, superfecta, and the Pick 3 for some races. While it’s harder to win these bets, a winning wager will pay substantially more than a straight win, place, or show bet.
Win
The Win bet is picking a horse to finish first. The payout depends on the horse’s odds before the race. Win bets on longshot horses will pay more than heavy favorites. Win bets cost $2 each.
Place
The Place bet is picking a horse to finish second. The bet also pays if your horse finishes first. Place bets cost $2 each.
Show
The Show bet is picking a horse to finish third. The bet also pays if your horse finishes first or second. Show bets cost $2 each.
Win Place Show or “Across the Board”
Add a win, place and show bet on the same horse into one combination bet. Some Breeders’ Cup bettors will place Across the Board bets on multiple horses.
The race results will determine your payout. The bet pays the most if your horse finishes first. You would collect on all 3 bets. The bet pays the least if your horse finishes third. You would only collect on your show bet and lose your win and place bets.
